Black Bear Hunting News

Black Bear Hunting
Drought has been tough on black bears this year, but will make it easier for hunters to locate hungry bruins. Jerry Apker, resident bear expert for the Colorado Division of Wildlife in Monte Vista, points out that bears become more mobile whenever there are food shortages and "mobile bears are vulnerable." That should make bear hunting "very good" this fall, Apker says.
Ontario Government Reviews Nuisance Bears
To help alleviate nuisance bear problems in parts of Ontario, a proposal to allow for the chasing of bears with dogs will be posted on the Environmental Bill of Rights registry. This proposed change would allow daytime pursuit, chase and search for bears, but would not permit the capturing or killing of black bear.
Poached Black Bear Found
A poached bear was found just east of the White Tank Mountains on Aug. 22 and Arizona Game and Fish Department officers are seeking the public's help to solve the case. The carcass of the bear was found by an area resident riding a mountain bike in the desert near the end of 199th Avenue near the White Tanks, and the person astutely called Game and Fish.
Black Bear, Mountain Lion Seasons Open
Black bear and mountain lion seasons opened in most Idaho game management units August 30, with others to open September 15. They close at various dates, and in some units lion seasons close after a certain number of female lions have been killed. To learn which units are closed, check the Fish and Game website or call 1-800-323-4334.
Sandia and Manzano Black Bear Hunting Restricted
Effective immediately, hunters may only take one male bear in Big Game Management Units 8 and 14. The State Game Commission voted to end the harvest of all female bears in the Sandia and Manzano Mountains at its Aug. 23 meeting. The Commission further mandated that hunters use dogs in order to tree bears. This should help facilitate hunters in determining the sex of the bear prior to killing it.
Please Don't Shoot Radio-Collared Bears
Though it is still legal for hunters to shoot radio-collared bears, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is asking bear hunters not to do so this year. In previous years the DNR emphasized that radio-collared bears were legal game and encouraged hunters who shot collared bears to inform the DNR and to leave the collar at the bear registration station. These regulations and procedures have not changed. However, research goals have changed and now focus more on bear reproduction and movements rather than bear mortality.
Fall Black Bear License Deadline Approaching
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks reminds bear hunters that licenses must be purchased by August 31 for fall black bear hunting season. In addition to the Conservation License and Black Bear License, a new Hunting Access Enhancement fee will be charged at the time the hunter purchases their first license of the year.
Black Bear Hunting Clinics
Bear hunters can improve their chances of having a safe and successful hunt by attending one of the clinics offered by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The clinics have been designed by bear hunters and research personnel to provide an in-depth look at the Minnesota black bear. The clinics are not mandatory but are strongly recommended by the DNR. Last year almost 2,000 hunters and bear enthusiasts attended clinics.
Black Bear Possibly From Wyoming
The black bear observed near Henry in the Panhandle west of Scottsbluff on May 15 and 16 may be the same bear captured by the Wyoming Department of Fish and Game on the Warren Air Force base on the west edge of Cheyenne, Wyoming on Tuesday May 21, according to Gary Schlichtemeier, district wildlife manager at the Game and Parks Commission's district office in Alliance.
Black Bear Sighted
A young black bear was observed Wednesday evening and Thursday morning near the small Nebraska Panhandle town of Henry, west of Scottsbluff along the Wyoming-Nebraska border, according to Gary Schlichtemeier, Wildlife Manager in the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission's District Office in Alliance.
