Congressman Announces Plan to End Bear Baiting
A Virginia Congressman has announced his intention to pass legislation that would ban bear hunting using bait on all federal lands. According to many state wildlife officials, baiting is needed to help control bear populations.
Preliminary Black Bear Harvest Third Best Ever
Hunters last week took 174 black bears during the extended bear season in Carbon, Monroe and Pike counties, according to a preliminary review of Pennsylvania Game Commission harvest reports. When combined with the earlier statewide three-day season held just prior Thanksgiving week, it brings the preliminary bear harvest total to 2,654, the state's third best on record.
Bear Season Update
According to Fish and Game wildlife biologists, the bear-hunting season has produced 281 bears as of November 26. Bear season in most units is over, though the White Mountains, Central Region and WMU C2 remain open to still hunting/stalking until December 8.
Black Bear Pursuit and Hunting Focus of Public Meetings
Limiting opportunities to pursue bears with hounds in Utah in the fall will be among items the public may provide input on at upcoming Regional Advisory Council meetings.
Black Bear Task Force Releases Draft
The 12-member Maryland Black Bear Task Force (BBTF) today issued its draft report which is available on the Department of Natural Resources Web site, by email, and at Wildlife and Heritage Service offices. Among the task force draft recommendations are the use of "Regulated Hunting" as a tool to achieve a targeted population objective.
Special Black Bear Gun Season
A special firearms season for black bear hunting without dogs will run concurrently with the first week of the 2002 buck gun season (November 25-30) in Boone, Fayette, Kanawha, Nicholas, Raleigh (west of I-77) counties, according to Paul Johansen, Assistant Chief in Charge of Game Management for the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources' Wildlife Resources Section.
Preliminary Black Bear Season Results
Licensed Massachusetts black bear hunters took to the woods of western Massachusetts during the September 3 through 21 early season and emerged with 110 bruins which were tagged and brought to MassWildlife check stations. During the same season one year ago, 99 bears were checked.

Black Bear Sighted
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has received reports of a black bear roaming the area around Abbeville and causing a nuisance. Biologists know the bear well, as they have captured it on two previous occasions. The 225-pound young male bear was originally captured in April near a garbage dump on Avery Island.
DNR Seeks Help From Bear Hunters
Michigan Department of Natural Resources researchers conducting a study to evaluate a new method for estimating the size of the black bear population in the northern Lower Peninsula are asking for assistance from successful bear hunters this fall.
