Governor Speaks Out Against Looming Anti-Hunting Ballot Issue
During a recent speech before a crowd of Maine sportsmen, Gov. Baldacci urged voters to oppose a referendum proposal to ban bear hunting with bait, dogs or traps in Maine. He said Maine citizens should trust the wildlife biologists who maintain that hunting over bait is needed to manage the state's bear population.
Slight Increase in Black Bear Hunting Permits Approved
The Utah Wildlife Board recently approved 226 public black bear hunting permits for Utah's 2004 hunts after learning the state's black bear population is doing well.
Preliminary Bear Harvest Third Best Ever
he Pennsylvania Game Commission reported today hunters took 149 black bears during a special six-day season in Poconos-based Wildlife Management Unit 3D. But when combined with the earlier three-day statewide bear season harvest of 2,846, the overall preliminary 2003 bear harvest of 2,995 fell short of the record harvest in 2000 of 3,075.

Early Bear Season Harvest Numbers
Licensed black bear hunters took to the woods of western and central Massachusetts during the September 3 through 20 early season and emerged with a new statewide record of 142 bruins with a one week season in November still to come. The previous record, set in 1995, was 134 for the entire season. Last year's harvest was 116 bears.
Black Bear Season Should be Outstanding
Over the past three years, Pennsylvania has recorded its three best bear seasons ever.
