Virginia's Bear, Deer, Turkey Harvest Data Announced

Wildlife biologists with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) have compiled preliminary figures for deer, turkey, and bear harvests for the 2011-2012 fall/winter hunting seasons. The white-tailed deer harvest was slightly up from last year while the turkey harvest increased significantly. The bear harvest was down from the previous year. Poor and spotty mast crops across the state this past fall coupled with management actions to meet population objectives all factored into fluctuations in populations and harvest trends.

Bear Hunting Workshop Planned in Montrose, Colorado

If you've ever wanted to hunt bears or if you want to improve your chances of harvesting one, plan to attend a workshop sponsored by Colorado Parks and Wildlife on March 10 in Montrose.      
Tony Bonacquista, a district wildlife manager and experienced bear hunter, will lead the presentation on hunting Colorado's black bears. He'll discuss bear biology, hunting tactics, field dressing, rules and regulations, and human-bear conflict issues.      

Arkansas’s Bear Harvest Continues to Be Strong

Arkansas’s bear harvest continues to be strong. Hunters harvested more than 400 bears during the 2011-12. Last year, hunters harvested more 450 bears. During the 2009-10 season, hunters harvested a record 530 bears.

The harvest totals were presented to commissioners of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission during its monthly meeting on Thursday.

Time Running Out to Apply for Idaho Bear Tags

Hunters have a few days left to apply for this spring's controlled bear hunts.

The application period ends Wednesday, February 15.

Fewer Black Bear Sightings Reported in 2011 in Ohio
According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife, 152 black bear sightings were reported in Ohio last year. Of that number, state wildlife personnel confirmed 60 sightings, which is a slight decrease compared to the 64 confirmed sightings in 2010. 
The 2011 confirmed sightings occurred in 19 different counties and involved an estimated 38 different black bears. Most of the reported bear sightings were in northeastern counties.

Florida FWC Moves Forward on Plan to Manage, Conserve Florida Black Bears

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is moving ahead on its plan to manage and conserve Florida black bears so they are never again at risk of extinction. With the bear population rebounding from about 300 to 3,000 over the past 40 years, the FWC recognizes Florida’s conservation success with bears and recommends the state’s largest land mammal be removed from the threatened species list.

Applications for controlled spring bear hunting are due by Feb. 10, 2012.

Apply for Spring Turkey Hunts Starting Feb. 1st in Idaho

The application period for spring turkey controlled hunts opens February 1 and runs to March 1.

The application period for spring black bear ends February 15.

Spring turkey and spring black bear seasons start April 15 - some controlled hunts open later. Leftover tags for spring turkey and bear controlled hunts go on sale April 1.

More Than 9.000 Bear Permits Available for Wisconsin's 2012 Season

A little more than 9,000 bear harvest permits will be available for the 2012 black bear season, about the same number of permits as last year.
