Virginia DGIF Acquires Short Hills Management Area

The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) announced that it has acquired Short Hills Wildlife Management Area, a 4,232-acre tract in Rockbridge and Botetourt counties. The acquisition involved The Wildlife Foundation of Virginia and the Virginia Outdoors Foundation who combined resources to provide interim funding to assist the VDGIF with the acquisition.

VDGIF Executive Director Bob Duncan noted, "Without the Virginia Outdoors Foundation and The Wildlife Foundation of Virginia this acquisition could not have been possible."

Oklahoma Archery Black Bear and Deer Season Kicks Off Oct. 1st

Oklahoma's deer and bear archery seasons kick off Oct. 1, not even a full week after the close of the second annual antelope archery season.

"While Oklahoma has always offered tremendous opportunities to hunt big game, we are at a historical high point for hunting opportunity," said Jerry Shaw, big game biologist for the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. "You can start your big game hunting season with the mid-September archery antelope season, take a few days break, and then continue hunting deer through the start of the new year."

Minnesota Asks Bear Hunters to Avoid Shooting Collared Bears

Hunters participating in this fall's bear hunt, which opened Sept. 1, should avoid shooting radio-collared or ear-tagged animals, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Taking a bear with a radio collar is legal unless the bear is accompanied by a researcher who has identified the bear to the hunter as a research animal.

ODFW released its fall hunting forecast. Based on surveys by staff biologists, the report offers hunters a good look at what to expect this fall.

New Jersey Black Bear Permit Apps Available October 1
The 2010 black bear hunting season is December 6-11. Anyone wishing to participate in the season must have completed a bear training seminar and possess a Black Bear Hunting Area Permit. The black bear permit application period will be October 1 - 30, 2010.
Mississippi Black Bear Poacher Issued a Citation

Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks conservation officers recently issued a citation for the illegal killing of a black bear in Coahoma County. The male bear weighed 230 pounds and was approximately five years old.

Maryland Black Bear Drawing Complete - Results Online

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) held the drawing for the 2010 Maryland Black Bear Hunting Permits. A record 3,850 applications were received online and by telephone over the 31-day period, surpassing the 3,608 applications DNR received in 2009.

New Brunswick Man Fined and Sentenced for Poaching

Ronald Gauvin, 57, of Allardville was fined $15,200 and sentenced to serve 42 days in jail on charges related to the Fish and Wildlife Act. He was sentenced on Thursday, Aug. 19, by Provincial Court Judge Ronald Leblanc.

Gauvin was charged with two counts of hunting moose out of season, two counts of selling moose meat, one count of possessing an illegal deer and one count of possessing an illegal bear.

Vermont Black Bear Season Now Open

Vermont's bear hunting season is September 1- November 17 this year.

Vermont's bear population is healthy and estimated at more than 5,500 black bears, according to the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department. The bear population has increased slowly for the last two decades, and regulated hunting is used to control the population's growth. Under the recently enacted 2010-2020 Big Game Plan the population objective is to maintain bear numbers to between 4,500 to 6,000 animals. Hunters took 629 bears in Vermont's 2009 hunting season.

Maryland Black Bear Apps Due Sept. 1st

Sept. 1st is the final day that the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will accept applications from hunters wishing to participate in this year's black bear hunting permit lottery.
