Colorado Bans Den Hunting

The Colorado Wildlife Commission set license numbers for most big game species for the 2011 hunting seasons Thursday and unanimously approved a regulation banning the hunting or harassment of black bears in their dens.

Idaho's Application Period for Fall Controlled Hunts Opened May 1

The application period for this fall's deer, elk, pronghorn, fall black bear and fall turkey controlled hunts started Sunday, May 1 and runs through June 5.

Fish and Game may ask the Idaho Fish and Game Commission, during the May 19 meeting, to reduce the number of available controlled hunt deer tags in some areas that have suffered higher than normal over-winter losses.

Fish and Game biologists plan to recommend that the commission reduce the number of controlled hunt deer tags available in antlerless and either-sex controlled deer hunts in:

New Mexico Man Accused of Poaching 39 Animals

A Taos man with a history of wildlife crimes has been charged with 39 counts of poaching in connection with the illegal killing and possession of 29 deer, five bears, one cougar and four elk through August 2010.

Ray Cortez, 25, also is accused of outfitting without a license and throwing the carcasses of several deer and elk off the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge. He pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to appear for a pre-trial hearing April 19 before Taos Magistrate Betty J. Martinez.

Washington FWC Meeting April 8-9

The Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission is scheduled to take action on a variety of new hunting rules at a public meeting April 8-9 in Olympia.

The commission, which sets policy for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), will meet both days in room 172 of the Natural Resource Building, 1111 Washington St. S.E. in Olympia. The meeting will start at 8:30 a.m. both days.

Minnesota Bear Hunt Applications Accepted Beginning April 1st

Applications for this fall's bear hunt will be accepted beginning Friday, April 1, at any Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) license agent and online.

Alaska Black Bear Hunters Must Provide GPS Coordinates for Sites

During the November 2010 Alaska Board of Game meeting in Ketchikan, a regulation was adopted that requires that all black bear baiting permit holders provide GPS coordinates to the department for each bait site before a permit will be issued.

Kentucky Considers Changes to Bear and Deer Seasons

The Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Commission at its quarterly meeting March 4 proposed bear season occur one week earlier than in past years and recommended deer zone changes for two counties.

The Commission recommends all hunting, fishing and boating regulations for approval by the General Assembly and approves all expenditures by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. All recommendations must be approved by legislators before they become law.

Wyoming Existing Bear Bait Site Registration Now Open

Black bear hunters who want to use bait for the upcoming bear seasons are advised that the registration period for existing bear bait sites began March 1.

Those who had bait sites registered in 2010 can register the same sites between March 1 and March 21. The registration period is closed from March 22 - 31 this year. Hunters can renew existing bait sites by telephone, mail, fax, in person or through a representative. Bait sites are registered for the year and cannot be changed until the following year.

Washington Spring Black Bear Applications Due March 10th

Hunters may now purchase and submit applications for a 2011 spring black bear hunting permit, applicable to specific areas of western and eastern Washington.

To be eligible for a permit, hunters must purchase and submit an application to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) by midnight March 10.
