Washington Big Game Raffle Deadline July 22nd

Hunters have until Friday, July 22, to enter the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife's (WDFW) special big-game hunt raffles for this fall.

Raffle hunts are available for black-tailed deer, mule deer, white-tailed deer, westside elk, eastside elk, California bighorn sheep, moose and mountain goat. Like last year, five multi-species raffle hunts will be available in which hunters can harvest multiple animals.

Oregon Youth Hunter Must Wear Orange Starting August 1st

New rules that require youth to wear hunter orange when hunting take effect Aug. 1, 2011.

As of that date, hunters age 17 and under are required to wear a hunter (fluorescent) orange exterior garment or hat when hunting game mammals or upland game birds (except turkey) with any firearm.

Colorado Seeking Info on Bear Feeding Incident in Eagle

Colorado Division of Wildlife officers are asking the public for information about two or more individuals who were observed feeding cheeseburgers to a female black bear with three cubs at a Burger King restaurant in Eagle on Wednesday, June 28, between approximately 12:20 p.m. and 1:20 p.m..

Oklahoma Researchers Track Black Bears in Northeast

While black bears in southeast Oklahoma have been studied extensively by biologists and are even pursued by hunters each fall, less is known about bears inhabiting the northeast portion of the state. But a research project by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation in partnership with the Oklahoma Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit and the Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management at Oklahoma State University is helping to change that.

Maryland Black Bear Applications Accepted July 1

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will begin accepting applications for this year's lottery for black bear hunting permits starting July 1. Successful applicants will receive a permit valid for the black bear hunting season scheduled to take place October 24-29.

Massachusetts Deer and Bear Hunters - Applications Due July 16th

The Division of Fisheries and Wildlife (DFW) reminds deer hunters that in order to take antlerless deer during any deer hunting season, they must possess an antlerless deer permit. The July 16, 2011 deadline is fast approaching and applications postmarked after July 16 will not be accepted. DFW cautions deer hunters to refrain from assuming large quantities of over-the-counter permits will be available after permits are sent out in the early fall.

Minnesota Bear Hunt Lottery Results Available

New lottery results now are available for hunters who applied for a 2011 Minnesota bear hunting permit.

New Jersey Releases 2010 Black Bear Results

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's Division of Fish and Wildlife has released the final results of the 2010 Black Bear Hunting Season, held December 6-11, 2010. The season was held concurrently with the 6-Day Firearm Deer Season and was open in the area north of Rt. I-78 and west of Rt. I-287. The hunting season resulted in a total legal harvest of 592 black bears.

Mississippi Black Bears Surviving High Water

While some species of wildlife in the Mississippi Delta are leaving their home ranges for higher ground, black bears are waiting it out. Flights conducted last week by Mississippi State University located 12 bears with radio collars in flooded portions of the Delta. All of the collared bears’ locations were within their normal home ranges and all were in heavily flooded areas.  In fact, the four radio-collared female bears in Bolivar County were actually located inside the Mississippi River levee.

New York Considers Opening New Bear Hunt Areas

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Joe Martens today announced proposed changes that would open new areas east of the Hudson River to black bear hunting and establish uniform bear hunting season dates across the Southern Zone beginning in the 2011 hunting season.
