Sangre de Cristo, Colorado Bighorn Project Wraps Up

Nine Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep have been added to a new herd being established by Colorado Parks and Wildlife in the northern Sangre de Cristo Mountains of central Colorado. The sheep join 13 bighorns that were moved into the mountains of northeastern Saguache County in a similar operation in 2010.
 

North Dakota Bighorn Sheep Numbers Remain Strong

While three consecutive severe winters played a significant role in reducing many of the state’s western big game populations, overall bighorn sheep numbers are strong, according to Brett Wiedmann, big game biologist for the North Dakota Game and Fish Department in Dickinson.

A July-August survey in western North Dakota showed 290 bighorn sheep, unchanged from last year and just 26 below 2008’s record summer survey. “After recording dramatic declines in mule deer and pronghorn numbers, we were pleasantly surprised to see that our bighorns have remained stable,” Wiedmann said.

Washington Big Game Raffle Deadline July 22nd

Hunters have until Friday, July 22, to enter the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife's (WDFW) special big-game hunt raffles for this fall.

Raffle hunts are available for black-tailed deer, mule deer, white-tailed deer, westside elk, eastside elk, California bighorn sheep, moose and mountain goat. Like last year, five multi-species raffle hunts will be available in which hunters can harvest multiple animals.

Oregon Youth Hunter Must Wear Orange Starting August 1st

New rules that require youth to wear hunter orange when hunting take effect Aug. 1, 2011.

As of that date, hunters age 17 and under are required to wear a hunter (fluorescent) orange exterior garment or hat when hunting game mammals or upland game birds (except turkey) with any firearm.

Idaho Fish and Game Commission Meeting July 27/28

The Idaho Fish and Game Commission will consider wolf hunting and trapping seasons during the July 27 and 28 meeting in Salmon.

A public hearing will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 27, at the Idaho Fish and Game regional office in Salmon.

New Mexico Releases Desert Bighorn Sheep at Red Rock W.A.

After months of quarantine, desert bighorn sheep from Mexico were successfully released to join the existing herd at the Red Rock Wildlife Area. The 10 rams will supply new genes to a herd that began at Red Rock in the 1970s.

The newly introduced rams appear to be in good shape and the Department of Game and Fish is excited to see the outcome of years of collaborative efforts and wildlife roundups come to fruition with the release of these young sheep.

Wyoming's Big Game Lottery Held

Wyoming's version of the lottery was held with 820 resident and nonresident hunters hitting the jackpot with the completion of the annual drawings for moose, bighorn sheep and mountain goat licenses.

Game and Fish records show that 540 moose licenses were issued of which 446 went to residents for overall drawing odds of 4.9 percent. Nonresidents received 94 licenses for a total drawing percentage of 7.1 percent.
