North Dakota Bighorn Sheep License to be Auctioned

The Midwest Chapter of the Wild Sheep Foundation will auction a North Dakota bighorn sheep license at its annual fundraiser and banquet March 17 in Bloomington, Minn.

North Dakota has auctioned a bighorn sheep license each year since 1986 to fund sheep projects in the state, raising more than $890,000.

Last year’s license sold for $41,000. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the license sale are used to enhance management of North Dakota’s bighorn sheep.

North Dakota's 2011 Bighorn Sheep, Moose and Elk Harvests

Harvest statistics released by the North Dakota Game and Fish Department show overall hunter success during the 2011 season for bighorn sheep was 100 percent, 88 percent for moose and 50 percent for elk.

Four bighorn sheep units were open in 2011. Game and Fish issued one license in unit B1/B2, two licenses in unit B3, and two licenses in unit B4. One additional auction license holder was able to hunt any open area. All six hunters tagged adult rams.

February 29 is Wyoming's Deadline for Moose, Bighorn Sheep and Mountain Goat Applications

Hunters interested in entering the drawing for moose, bighorn sheep, and mountain goat licenses are reminded that applications must be received in the Cheyenne office by 5 p.m. Feb. 29.

Bighorn Sheep Released into Pine Ridge, Nebraska

Forty bighorn sheep trapped in Alberta, Canada, were released into the Pine Ridge near Harrison on Feb. 9, giving Nebraska a fifth subpopulation of this mammal popular among hunters and wildlife watchers.

The 35 ewes and five rams were trapped on a reclaimed portion of a coal mine at the foot of the Canadian Rockies west of Edmonton, Alberta on Feb. 7. Seventeen Nebraska Game and Parks Commission staff and two U.S. Department of Agriculture veterinarians traveled to the site last week to assist in the operation and to bring the sheep home.

Bighorn Sheep Herd Augmented Near Dillon, Montana

Forty-nine sheep captured on Wild Horse Island in northwest Montana last week have been safely released in the Tendoy Mountains south of Dillon.  The sheep from Wild Horse will bolster an existing herd of 40-50 sheep in the Tendoys.

Volunteers Needed for Bighorn Sheep Survey in California

The California Department of Fish and Game (DFG), the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), and the Society for Conservation of Bighorn Sheep are seeking individuals to assist biologists on March 3 and 4, 2012 (Saturday evening and all day Sunday).

No survey experience is necessary to participate but volunteers must attend a mandatory orientation on Saturday, March 3, at 6 p.m. at Verdemont Community Center and Library in San Bernardino.

Seventy-six ewes and 19 rams were captured by helicopter on several private ranches and a TPWD Wildlife Management Area, in the Beach, Sierra Diablo and Baylor mountain ranges of Culberson County and transported by trailer to the 300,000-acre state park in Presidio County.
