Bear Hunters: Turn in Harvested Teeth

The fall black bear season is here and once again, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife researchers are asking hunters for help. Hunters who bag a black bear in southwestern Oregon should turn in a premolar tooth and tissue sample from the bear to help with a census study.

This marks the fifth year wildlife researchers are using a unique method to count bears and help direct black bear management in the state.

Earlier this summer, researchers lured bears into bait stations by hanging sacks of tetracycline-laced bacon. The teeth of bears eating the bait are stained and become visible under ultraviolet light, allowing researchers to conduct a mark-recapture study to estimate the number of black bears in southwestern Oregon. The bear meat is safe to eat and will not cause staining in the teeth of people who eat the meat.

All hunters harvesting a bear in southwest Oregon should stop at a convenient check station where an attendant will help collect the tooth and related information. Researchers will notify hunters of the age of their bear once laboratory analysis is completed in about a year. A list of vendors follows.
