Arizona Sets Open Houses for 2007 Hunts
The Arizona Game and Fish Department will soon host a series of open houses about its 2007 elk and antelope hunt recommendations.
The open house format provides people with the opportunity to informally review the recommendations prior to the formal commission meeting when the recommendations will be considered on Dec. 9 in Phoenix. The open houses will also allow people to have face-to-face discussions with department staff relative to individual hunt recommendations. No formal presentations or formal receipt of comment will be included at these open houses, which will take place in each region of the state at department offices.
"In the past, the regional open houses for the department's big game hunt recommendations have been scheduled for just before the April commission meeting. However, with the new winter draw for elk and antelope starting in 2007, we will conduct regional open houses for those two species during the next couple of weeks," said Game Chief Leonard Ordway.
The idea of having the elk and antelope draw early for 2007 is to let hunters know early enough whether they have been drawn for these two popular big game animals, prior to their applying for fall deer, turkey, javelina, bear and buffalo hunts during the traditional application process in the spring. Earlier notification will also allow permit holders to better plan vacation time and provide them with more scouting opportunity for antelope and early elk hunts.
The open houses will be held:
- Tuesday, Nov. 28, 6-8 p.m., Mesa regional office, 7200 E. University Drive, Mesa.
- Tuesday, Nov. 28, 6-8 p.m., Yuma regional office, 9140 E. 28th St., Yuma.
- Tuesday, Nov. 28, 6-8 p.m., Pinetop regional office, 2878 E. White Mountain Blvd., Pinetop.
- Friday, Dec. 1, 6-8 p.m., Kingman regional office, 5325 N. Stockton Hill Road, Kingman.
- Friday, Dec. 1, 6-8 p.m., Tucson regional office, 555 N. Greasewood Road, Tucson.
- Tuesday, Dec. 5, 6-8 p.m., Flagstaff regional office, 3500 S. Lake Mary Road, Flagstaff.
Please keep in mind that the application deadline for elk and antelope is Feb. 13, 2007. Hunt permit-tags and refund warrants will be mailed out by April 27.
The department will begin accepting applications for the 2007 elk and antelope hunts as soon as the regulations are posted on the department's Web site at www.azgfd.gov. That posting should occur by the end of December. The printed regulations should be available at hunting license dealers by Jan. 12.
The grace period for the winter draw will end at 5 p.m. on Jan. 19. During the grace period, if a paper hunt-permit tag application that is manually submitted contains an error, then the department will make three attempts within a 24-hour period to notify the applicant by telephone (if a phone number is provided).
