The Arizona Game and Fish Department's Operation Game Thief program is offering a $500 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case of a dead bald eagle found by a hiker Nov. 21 in the Tucson Mountains.

The eagle carcass was found in a paper bag with rocks piled on top. It was located on a mountainside approximately 300 yards north of the Tucson Mountain Park parking area atop Gates Pass, where it may have been killed. The eagle’s tail and primary feathers had been removed, along with the feet.

Game and Fish officials believe the eagle was dead a few days before being discovered. Individuals with information about the case are urged to call Operation Game Thief at 1-800-352-0700, anonymously if need be, and reference OGT # 11-001867. Information may also be provided online at

The bald eagle was removed from the federal list of threatened and endangered species in 2007.

Well, sucks to see something

Well, sucks to see something like that happen to any animal, let alone a beautiful bald eagle.  By the sounds of what they took, and specifically how it was targeted, makes me think it was done to gather stuff for some sort of ritual, medicine man, something like that.  Just taking feet and feathers?  Has to be for a headdress, and maybe the feet they'll use for some sort of necklace.

I am not saying anything against Native Americans, so please nobody take it that way.  I just see it as a more than likely ending spot for those pieces of the bird.  I don't think a general poacher would shoot it and be selective like that.  It would seem to me that they would either keep the whole thing, or none of it if it was some "thrill kill".

Hopefully they will catch whomever did this and give them a stiff little fine.

  Well obviously this wasn't

Well obviously this wasn't a mistake but rather a purposeful killing of a protected bald eagle.  Removing the primary and tail feathers plus the feet is obviously a sign of a poacher who had a specific desire.  And my guess this poacher is a habitual criminal in taking wildlife illegally.  Nothing like giving the animal rights activists something to use - But this was certainly NOT a hunter.  And the poacher tried to hide it in a paperbag under some rocks - was that a proper burial for our nation's symbol?  I really hope they catch this criminal and make a statement on his fine and jail time.  My opinion here is also that a mere $500 reward for information leading to the arrest of a suspect who killed a bald eagle is too low of a dollar amount and in order to more quickly come to an arrest I would think $5000 would be more suitable.  But I also understand there is a budget line for these rewards.  What is appropriate is the fine for killing a bald eagle - $10,000.00.  That would make up for a larger reward.  Here is the link to the information -
