Archery Hunting Opportunity

Tennessee archery hunters will have an opportunity to hunt deer on the Volunteer Army Ammunition Plant (VAAP) for the first time since 1999. Hunting on VAAP was discontinued when the U.S. Army divested itself from ownership of the property.

Hamilton County and the City of Chattanooga, in cooperation with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, are once again providing sportsman with an opportunity to hunt this unique area that has an abundant deer population. Problems caused by an abundant deer herd, such as collisions with vehicles and damage to suburban landscapes, should be reduced through the harvest of deer by sportsmen.

Approximately 4000 acres, owned by Hamilton County and the City of Chattanooga, will be opened for hunting for 150 permitted archery hunters. For the 2004 season, a three-day hunt will be held on December 10-12.

Bag limit for the hunt will be two deer with no more than one being antlered; deer taken on this hunt will count against the Unit A second muzzleloader/archery season bag limit and the statewide antlered buck bag limit. Hunting permits will be allocated through a hand held drawing to be held at the Redoubt Soccer Complex in Chattanooga on December 4.

To participate, hunters must possess an archery license (Type 010 supplemental license - along with the Type 001 license) or a Sportsman license or a Lifetime Sportsman license and must sign up for the drawing between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. EST. The drawing will be held at 10 a.m. EST and hunters must be present at the drawing to be selected. Hunters must be 10 years of age or older to apply and all hunters must have passed a Hunter Education course. Immediately after the drawing, permitted hunters will be allowed to scout the VAAP property.

No firearms, muzzleloaders or bows will be allowed on the area during the scouting time. ATV's may be used on the scouting day and during the hunt as long as they are operated on roads open to vehicle traffic or in areas zoned for ATV use.

The drawing will be held at the Redoubt Soccer Complex across from the main entrance to VAAP, now known as Enterprise South Industrial Park, located at 6705 Bonny Oaks Drive.

DIRECTIONS: From I-75, travel west on Bonny Oaks Drive 1.6 miles. The Redoubt Soccer Complex is approximately 1/2 mile east of the Hickory Valley Road intersection.
