Young hunters ages 12-15 years may purchase permits for Nebraska’s Youth Deer Season, Sept. 15 through Dec. 31, but they have to fill out the application form accurately to receive the proper permit.

Bob Zegar, assistant administrator of the Game and Parks Commission’s Budget and Fiscal Division’s permits division, says some youths are improperly filling out the application form and are not receiving the youth hunting permit they wanted.

Zegar said to avoid confusion, when the youth goes online to purchase the youth deer hunting season permit, they must choose the archery/firearm/muzzleloader option when asked to indicate their weapon choice. “The youth deer hunting season permits are similar to the season choice permits, in that the permit allows the youth to hunt deer during each season with the appropriate weapon until the permit is filled.”

Youth deer hunting season permits are available online at the Game and Parks Commission’s web site at www.outdoornebraska.org.

The permit allows the youth to hunt deer with archery equipment Sept. 15 - Nov. 12 and Nov. 22 - Dec. 31; with a firearm Nov. 13 - Nov. 21; and with a muzzleloader Dec. 1 - 31. The permit allows the youth to take one either-sex deer anywhere in the state during those seasons. Youths age 16 may hunt on youth deer permits provided they are 15 years when they apply and provided they are 15 years on Sept. 15 of the calendar year. All youths must have passed an approved hunter education course to hunt with a firearm, and a bowhunter education course to hunt with a bow, and must carry the appropriate certificate with them. Youths must be accompanied by an adult (21 years or older), and must hunt with legal weapons appropriate for the season in which they hunt.
