Nebraska residents are encouraged to apply in person at the DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge for a special permit to hunt on the refuge during the January late firearm season. Though not required at the time application is made at DeSoto, all hunters taking part in the hunt must obtain a Season Choice Area 21 deer permit prior to hunting.

The special hunt is scheduled for Jan. 8-9, 2005, and is being held to help reduce the size of the deer herd on the refuge, which is estimated at more than 100 deer per square mile. Only antlerless deer may be taken during this hunt and on any Season Choice 21 permits, said Kit Hams, big game program manager for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

Season Choice 21 permits are valid in those areas north of the Kansas border and south of U.S. Hwy. 30; and east of Nebraska Hwy. 50 and west of the Missouri River.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has authorized 135 special permits to be issued, about half of which were issued Monday. Hunters must apply for the permits in person at the RefugeHeadquarters. Muzzleloaders are the only weapons authorized for use during the hunt.

Currently, more than 3,200 Season Choice 21 permits are available at Commission permitting offices, or online at
