The Michigan Department of Natural Resources reminds hunters that Aug. 1 is the deadline to apply for a public land antlerless deer license for the 2002 deer hunting season. Public land antlerless licenses will be available only through the drawing process.

This year, leftover public land licenses will not be made available following the drawing. Hunters may apply online or at or at any authorized license agent. There is a $4, nonrefundable application fee. Drawing results will be available beginning at 10 a.m. on Sept. 4 at the DNR website. Postcards to successful applicants who did not apply online will be mailed by Sept. 11. All others should check results online after Sept. 4.

Private land antlerless licenses will be available over-the-counter beginning Aug. 2. Hunters may purchase one license per day until the deer management unit quota is filled. There is no limit to the number of antlerless licenses an individual hunter may purchase.

Other changes include the elimination of the minimum acreage requirement and the need for a tax identification number to purchase a private land license.

Hunters age 12 to 16-years-old may purchase one antlerless license over the counter (public or private) until Aug. 1. No application fee or drawing is required. A youth must appear in person with a parent or guardian to purchase a junior antlerless deer hunting license.
