Amendments to the big game rules regarding bear, bighorn sheep, deer and Valles Caldera elk permits will be open for consideration at the State Game Commission meeting, scheduled at 9 a.m. Oct. 22 at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, 2401 12th Street NW in Albuquerque.

The Commission will consider the following amendments to the big game rule:

Amending bear hunt dates and establishing a statewide zone system for bears;

Separating hunt dates for bighorn sheep auction and raffle winners for the 2004-2005 season;

Creating and establishing seasons, weapon types and bag limits for two deer-enhancement licenses;

Allocating all elk licenses on the Valles Caldera National Preserve through the public draw and

requiring applicants to submit proof of an authorization access for the Preserve.

Also on the agenda are presentations on the desert bighorn sheep recovery plan, prepared by the Desert Bighorn Advisory Committee, and a long-range operational plan for sandhill cranes.

The Department will provide recommendations for management of a state park at Eagle Nest Lake. The Commission will consider dedicating and reserving a bulk quantity of water in Eagle Nest Reservoir that is in excess of the 48,000-acre feet already committed through prior water rights.

The Commission also will receive an update on the status of the Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation Plan initiative. The plan must be completed by October 2005 to qualify for additional federal funding of wildlife conservation programs to preclude federal listing of sensitive species.

A closed executive session is scheduled during the meeting. A detailed agenda is available on the Department's web site at www.gmfsh.state.nm.us.
