Alaska Board of Game Terms Change
On April 14, 2008, Governor Palin signed into law Senate Bill 253, an act relating to the appointment of members of the Board of Game sponsored by Senator Charlie Huggins. Under the new law, board member terms will now end June 30 instead of March 1. The bill also sets a requirement that the appointments be made by April 1. These changes bring consistency between the Board of Game and Board of Fisheries.
The legislation included language to provide a transition period for the change in dates. The new term expiration date applies to all members who were appointed after January 1, 2008. Future board members as well as the three appointed this winter (Craig Fleener, Lou Bradley, and Ted Spraker), will be subject to the June 30 term expiration date. The terms for the board members serving as of January 1, 2008 (Bob Bell, Ben Grussendorf, Dick Burley and Cliff Judkins) will expire March 1 at the end of their three year term. In 2009 and 2010, the Governor will need to make appointments to the Board prior to the spring regulatory meetings.
The new law will be an improvement to the process for appointing and confirming appointees for service on the Board of Game. It will enhance the regulatory process by giving new members adequate time to prepare for regulatory board meetings, particularly the large regulatory meetings held in the spring each year.
