Season summaries, unit harvest projections, study objectives and more information on species harvested in South Dakota are available in two publications from the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish, and Parks.

Harvest Survey Coordinator Art Smith said that in 2001 South Dakota held over 15 different deer seasons, plus additional small game, upland bird and migratory bird seasons, resulting in about 50 season or specie harvest summaries.

Harvest summaries from each of these seasons are available in two separate reports. The 2001 Annual Report on Big Game Harvest Projections includes season summaries, recent harvest and licensing trends, weapon use comparisons, various distributions of the harvest and unit harvest projections for all deer, elk, antelope, mountain goat, bighorn sheep and turkey seasons in South Dakota. The 2001 Annual Report on Small Game, Upland Bird, and Migratory Game Bird Harvest Projections is in its second year of production and includes similar summaries for most other hunted species in South Dakota.

"Both reports were originally produced with research biologists and wildlife managers in mind," Smith said, "but in recent years we have seen an increasing interest by the general hunting public for the information presented in these publications."
