State lawmakers around the country seeking to lead their constituencies out of economic woe may want to make note of a new Texas law that’s having very positive financial effects for the state. The law allows landowners to sell permits for taking invasive and destructive feral hogs via helicopter and is being lauded as a huge success.

Texas Expands Use of Suppressors for Hunting of Non-exotic Game

Officials in Texas have adopted rules allowing hunters to use suppressors (often called silencers) on their firearms effective September 1, 2012. Texas has now become one of a growing number of states that allow or are considering allowing suppressed hunting. Arizona just enacted permission for their use in March of 2012.

Voluntary Inspections Continue to Protect Michigan Farms, Natural Resources Against Invasive Swine

On April 17 and 18, 2012, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) conducted six inspections of properties that in the past may have possessed swine that are prohibited in Michigan. The compliance inspections were conducted with the full consent of the property owners. Each of the properties was found to be free of prohibited swine.

Michigan Department of Natural Resources Files Suit Against Hunting Ranch

On Tuesday, April 10, 2012, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources filed a civil complaint against Ronald McKendrick and Charlene McKendrick, who own and operate the Renegade Ranch Hunting Preserve in Cheboygan County. The McKendricks are being sued for violations of Michigan's Invasive Species Act, which outlaws certain types of swine.

The complaint, brought in Cheboygan County Circuit Court, asks the court to require the McKendricks to comply with the state's Invasive Species Act and to remove prohibited swine from their property.

California DFG Holds Lottery for Wild Pig Hunt at San Antonio Valley Ranch

The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) has opened a lottery for a no-fee wild pig hunt at San Antonio Valley Ranch. The application period closes April 27, and the hunt will be held on May 19-20.

The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission (LWFC) adopted a notice of intent at their March 1 meeting, to accept public comment on proposed feral hog trapping regulations recommended the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF).

The proposed regulations would allow feral hogs to be trapped year-round. Persons using cage or corral traps to capture feral hogs would be required to have a valid Louisiana basic hunting license. Persons using snares to trap feral hogs would be required to have a valid Louisiana trapping license.

California DFG Holds Wild Pig Hunts in Yolo County

The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) will hold eight limited wild pig hunts at Bobcat Ranch in Yolo County from March13 – May 2, 2012.

Offered through DFG’s Shared Habitat Alliance for Recreational Enhancement (SHARE) Program, a total of 48 hunters will be selected through a random drawing for an access permit to the private Bobcat Ranch property.

Each of the eight hunts will be two days and offered in the following methods:

North Carolina Wildlife Commission Proposes Night Hunting of Coyotes and Feral Hogs

The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is inviting the public to comment on proposed rules that will allow the hunting of feral swine and coyotes at night with a light.

The proposed seasons would be year-round, and would allow the hunting of feral swine and coyotes on Sundays on private lands with archery equipment. Night hunting is one means of controlling the population of coyotes and feral swine, both of which are non-native to North Carolina.

In Kentucky, wild pigs may be hunted with firearms year-round with no daily bag limit, but wildlife biologists believe trapping is the most effective way to control the feral pests.

"In established populations, hunting often educates more pigs than it removes," said Chad Soard, a wildlife biologist with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. "Research has shown that relying too heavily on hunting will not control pigs and may hasten their spread."
