As part of its efforts to facilitate public opportunities for hunting and angling, the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership presented the Wyoming Game & Fish Department a check for $10,000 at the Wyoming Game & Fish Commissioners Meeting last week. The funds will support the state’s Private Lands Public Wildlife Access Program, commonly referred to as the Sportsmen’s Access Program, which enables access by resident and non-resident hunters and anglers to privately owned lands in Wyoming.

There is a nothing like the adrenaline rush of a first hunt – especially when it’s an elk hunt. Sportsman Channel, the leader in outdoor TV for the American sportsman, is proud to give viewers an up-close view of a very unique “first hunt” on Wyoming’s Call of the Wild. There is nothing ordinary about this elk hunt as a mother of four and her son experience hunting for the very first time at the spectacular Wagonhound Ranch in Douglas, WY. The results are “spot-on” and you can watch Wyoming’s Call of the Wild on Wednesday, May 2 at 7 p.m. EST.

Fishing is a popular and important activity in Wyoming, so understanding anglers’ preferences and perspectives is valuable to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department.

That’s why the department mailed postcards to more than 12,000 anglers April 17, both residents and nonresidents, asking them to go online and complete a survey about their angling preferences.

Twenty-six elk were captured and fitted with Global Positioning System (GPS) collars on February 17 and 18 as part of an ongoing study to monitor how hunters and elk use beetle-killed forests.

Baggs wildlife biologist Tony Mong says biologists with Quicksilver Air, Inc. captured the elk from a helicopter.

                    Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation

So far in 2012, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation has allocated $1,258,888 for habitat stewardship and protection projects in six key elk states. The figure represents a significant increase from 2011.

More than 139,000 acres should be conserved for elk and other wildlife in 2012 as a result of these initial allocations.

Affected states include Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming.

RMEF will announce funding allocations for additional states later this year.

Wildlife agencies across the country not only encourage adults to mentor youth hunters, they applaud it – but in respect to fairness and safety, there are still some regulations and laws to abide by, even before getting the kid afield.

That’s what wildlife officers detected was afoul with a Jackson businessman’s big game applications submitted for his daughter – not just in Wyoming, but also in three other western states.
