Hawaii Community Rallies for Recovery of the Endangered Hawaiian Monk Seal

The Department of Land and Natural Resources and NOAA Fisheries announced this week that a three-year old male monk seal was found dead Sunday on a northeast Kaua‘i beach. The death has been classified as “suspicious.” The DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement and NOAA Office of Law Enforcement are investigating the case. It is the latest in a number of suspicious monk seal deaths that began in November 2011 on Moloka`i.

To protect Hawai‘i island from the impacts of axis deer that were illegally introduced and are now spreading, the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), has been providing resources for a team to investigate the known locations of, and more recently to begin controlling deer. Axis deer are not native to Hawai‘i, and they are known pests of agriculture, as well as native and culturally significant plants, many of which are already endangered.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources announces the opening of archery hunting in Pu‘u Anahulu Game Management Area (GMA), beginning Saturday, March 3, 2012, and continuing on weekends and state holidays through June 30, 2012. Annual closure of the archery season in this GMA will be from July through February.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) announces the opening of the Waikiki-Diamond Head Shoreline Fisheries Management Area O‘ahu, to fishing for one year beginning January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2012.

The fishery management area encompasses the nearshore waters between the ‘Ewa wall of the Waikiki War Memorial Natatorium and the Diamond Head Lighthouse, and from the high-water mark on shore to a minimum seaward distance of 500 yards, or to the edge of the fringing reef if one occurs beyond 500 yards.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources announces the opening of a feral goat and feral pig control opportunity in the Napali Coast State Park and Hono O Na Pali Natural Area Reserve, portions of Hunting Unit G on the island of Kauai. The areas open to animal control will be between Ho'olulu (3.5 miles) to Kalalau valleys (11 miles). The Kalalau trail will be closed at the 2.5 mile marker but the Hanakapi‘'ai beach and falls trail will remain open to the public. Regular camping permits for Kalalau will not be issued for control hunt dates.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources announces the opening of the 2011 Spring Bearded Turkey Hunting Season on Hawaii Island beginning Tuesday, March 1, 2011. The spring season will run 31 consecutive days through Thursday, March 31, 2011. The spring season will be for bearded turkeys only.

Tags are required and may be obtained without charge from any Hawaii Island Division of Forestry & Wildlife office and a number of commercial vendors. Hunters must present current State of Hawaii Hunting License when obtaining tags. Turkey tags are also required on private land.
