Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks announced today that it will host a series of public meetings this spring as a first step toward developing a long-term bison conservation and management plan for the state. The plan will be developed through a programmatic environmental impact statement, which will address issues associated with bison and options for their long-term management as a Montana wildlife species.

First Buffalo Calf of the Season Spotted at Custer State Park, South Dakota

The first buffalo calf of the spring, a heifer, in Custer State Park was spotted on April 7, 2012. It was found by park staff in the south end of the park near the south fork of Lame Johnny Creek.

The park has about 900 head of bison going into the spring and is expecting around 400 calves. The herd size should be around 1,300 at the Annual Buffalo Roundup in September.

Drought forces temporary move of 40 animals

A two-year drought is forcing the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT) to move bison from the Sandsage Bison Range and Wildlife Area, near Garden City, to Maxwell Wildlife Area, in McPherson County north of Canton. The drought has depleted forage on the area, and the move is being made to protect both the sensitive range as well as the bison.

Montana FWP to Recommend Tribal Lands for Bison Relocations

In response to a recent environmental assessment, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks will recommend that 68 disease-free bison be relocated to two northern Montana Indian reservations.

The tribal lands were evaluated in an EA that considered moving about 150 disease-free bison that currently are held in a quarantine facility and on a ranch in southwestern Montana. The tribal lands recommended include the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation near Malta and the Fort Peck Indian Reservation near Wolf Point.

Older bulls to be sold through sealed bids submitted to the Pratt Operations Office
In recent years, the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism (KDWPT) Sandsage Bison Range, near Garden City, has sold excess animals at an auction in Salina. However, this year, the area has a handful of adult and 3 ½-year-old bulls that must be removed from the herd. Because the Salina auction does not accept bulls older than 2 ½ years, area managers have decided to sell these older bulls through a sealed bid auction.

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is seeking comment on an environmental assessment of four interim locations and management for about 150 disease-free bison pending the development of a statewide bison conservation strategy.

The interim locations include two Indian reservations and two wildlife management areas. Under the proposal bison could be moved to one or any combination of the four potential locations.
