Alaska May/June 2010
Pictures from our May/June 2010 trip to Alaska. We flew from Lake Hood in Anchorage to the outfitters camp 100 miles NW in this DeHavilland Beaver. His camp was homesteaded around 1980 and the buildings all built with timber cut at the site. The view from our cabin (only spent one night there). Our spike camp was one 9x9' tent right at tree line in the foothills of the Alaska Range. Our view out the front door (tent flap) was awesome, as you can imagine. There is a grizzly bear atop that little rise, we saw him at about 250 yds one afternoon. My Buddy had to leave before I did and the outfitter came out to lead him back (too dangerous to travel alone). I watched the two of them depart and stayed two days (one night) alone in the spike camp. Something new to this fella from Tennessee, but I enjoyed being there alone. After bumping into a small black bear cub without my rifle, I learned quickly to never go anywhere without it. Three days of rain did little to dampen my enthusiasm for the bush. 8 days without a shower didn't either! The scenery and serenity was something I'll never forget. I'd go back again in a heartbeat if/when I can again afford it.
