2011 Elk Hunt - Platoro, Colorado
I was able to go up to Platoro, Colorado on a 2011 Elk Hunt! This was my first Elk Hunt and unfortunately we lost the animal that I shot using my Maxxis 35. I ranged him at 55 Yards and must have shot him really low!
The Elk was seen 2 weeks later in good condition. There was blood on the arrow and blood on the ground for about a mile but we had to hang out over night and we think he laid down and licked his wounds while he was trying to heal.
The reason we know it was the same Elk that was seen 2 weeks later is because there was a patch of hair missing in his brisket area, which is where I assume I hit him! Also he was a 4x3 with the 3 side cork screwing upward in a wierd fashion. Was the worste feeling ever losing a wounded animal. This was only the first time this has ever happened to me and I will make sure I prepare myself better to take a 50 Yard Shot or pass on the Shot all together next time.
Anyways, here are the nature pics and some pics of us having fun!
Check out our Elk Fail Video at: http://youtu.be/BQF23Nrr5C8
Not proud of the failure but was happy to be out in the woods hunting! The video is not great, you can hear me breathing hard and almost freaking out when this Elk sprints in! Sorry for the horrible video and not so happy news of the wounded animal! However, I think everyone can learn from each others mistakes!
The mistake on this one was not placing our caller in the best position, me not practicing near enough at 55 yards before that hunt, and not taking the second shot at 48 yards to finish him off.

Beautiful area! It sucks, but
Beautiful area!
It sucks, but it does happen sometimes. On one of my last pig hunts I shot and hit low, and we tried tracking him but lost him in the end. 2 weeks later another hunter who comes up on the ranch we live on got one with his bow. Had a bullet hole, so I am assuming it was the one I couldn't find, but I hate that feeling of being the cause of an animal running around wounded. I felt awful when it happened. Searched the hills for almost 2 hours. But at least you had fun and got to play outdoors and see some nice scenery.
