Freedom Arms .454 Casull Review
Freedom Arms chambers their single action, 5 shot revolver for the .454 cartridge and it is a massive affair out of necessity. While you can find factory ammo made by Hornady, Buffalo Bore, Cor-Bon, and Black Hills, it is expensive and sometimes hard to find. Being a reloader and bullet maker, included in this review are some options for an owner of a Freedom Arms .454. I want this review to help out anyone who owns one or is thinking about buying one, to review the many options to enable someone to shoot it a lot. There is no sense in telling you how good the revolver is, if you can't afford to shoot it or find the ammo. If you plan on taking it hunting then plenty of practice is mandatory, which is true of any hunting weapon but especially a handgun. Read more...

Great article. I don't understand though why you need a different cylinder to shoot 45. colt through the 454. My understanding is that they are like the 44 mag/44spcl and 357mag/38spcl. Just curious. |

The factory advises that you use a 45 Colt cylinder is because shooting 45's in a 454 might cause residue to accumulate in front of the cylinder and when you shoot 454's they might be hard to chamber or even cause excessive pressure. A through cleaning might prevent that which I do but many people don't clean the cylinder. It can also happen in a 357 or 44 cylinder under certain conditions. I have a customized .454 and thank you for the informative article. While the porting does annoy fellow bench mates, it helps greatly on that second shot in the field. |
