Up here in the Grand River Basin we had winds steady @ 15-20 and gusting to 40mph the first week, let alone just the weekend. I havent seen any keepers but my neighbor's clan got 9 deer (2 being fair bucks) and my wife shot a young doe on the last night(They tend to walk right up to her!, last year @ 60yrds on her first ever hunt and this year @ 40yds in the back yard w/ my .338 RUM , after I had her gun since she said she wasn't going hunting ) *Note the last night was dead calm, no wind at all.
I saw alot of game moving last evening and muzzleloader season is now open. Its a slow steady rain now. But hopes for some meat in the freezer is still w/ me! I still have muzzleloader, late doe and archery to go. No worries!just fun
It looks like the 4 point restriction may have had a part in the buck kills but that makes sense. The does where up so at least people got some meat. Although some say wind isnt a big factor(including me) I really do think this time the wind pulled us down. Rut was in full strut and everything looked perfect until the wind came. The newspaper talked of it being cold but I dont think 20 degrees @ night as cold for a deer!
Hope others out there got thier big one? |

I HUNT NE MISSOURI AND OPENING MORNIG WAS VERY SLOW. I SAW A FEW DOES AND ONLY ONE BUCK BECAUSE OF THE WIND. SUNDAY SEEMED MORE LIKE OPENING DAY WITH A LOT OF DEER MOVEMENT AND A MUCH HIGHER NUMBER OF SHOTS HEARD. I PASSED UP SEVERAL NICE BUCKS VIDEO TAPING ALL OF THEM INCLUDING ONE REALLY NICE 10 THAT CHASED SOME SMALLER BUCKS AROUND FOR AN HR AND A HALF, AT ONE TIME COMING WITHIN 25 YDS. THIS BUCK WAS LATER TAKEN BY A NEIGHBOR AND ENDED UP GROSS SCORING 157.WE HAVE HAD THE POINT RESTRICTIONS FOR A FEW YRS NOW I LOVE THE IDEA. WE HAVE ALWAYS TRIED TO HARVEST ONLY MATURE BUCKS TO PROVIDE GOOD HUNTING FOR YEARS TO COME. IT MAY HURT THE DEER HARVEST NUMBERS BUT I LIKE IT. WE NEED TO ENCOURAGE THE HARVEST OF MORE DOES. |
