I'm new to the whole mock scrape thing, so a question: how many on average, say in a day, does a buck make scrapes? I guess where I'm going with it is, how often should I start a "new" scrape or how many should be made at one time?

I have made a couple Mock scrapes and put a dripper over them . Since I only have 2 drippers I like to have my Mock scrapes some where CLOSE to a rub line that I have found . I note the prevailing wind to make my Mock scrape also so if he starts checking them I am well out of the wind and can be within ear shot to send out a call "grunt call" to the Dominant buck checking scrapes.

Another question would be how big of a scrape should be made ?
I would say 4x4 under a hemlock branch....that is about 6-7' high above the scrape....located from known rubs...

I think the first person who definitively figures out scrapes and rubs will be a billionaire.

I've read a lot about them, seen a million of them, hunted over hundreds. All I can say for sure is that they indicate where the bucks are hanging out around hunting season, and they can give you an idea which way he was travelling when he made it (so if you see them all "pointing" in the same general direction you've got an idea of his route).

Beyond that, I wouldn't hang my hat on anything about them.

As to how many they mak in day....dunno, probably several.

I believe that some are revisited...some aren't. I haven't seen any yet that were revisited all "pre-rut/rut". If there's a lot of them (all about the same size, looking like they were made by the same deer) and a couple fresh ones in a small area that's where I'd set up shop, but I wouldn't waste much time there; in my opinion if you haven't seen him in a couple days he's either nocturnal or moved on and so would I.

As I said in the first place who ever definitively figures out scrapes and rubs will make a ton of cash. My bank account balance will tell you I'm not that guy.

I have been hunting from this treestand in the last 3 yrs. and have gotten 2 nice 8pt.bucks and the first one I shot . I scouted him out and found fresh rubs and 2-3 scrapes in the area.....BUT ...... when I got to my treestand the day I got Him , I started with grunting and he came from the top of the mountain to my treestand ......

Just before I shot the Buck,,,,

He was walking down a unused tote path out front of my treestand by my scent bombs and he Made a 2x2 scrape below a small Hemlock then continued to walk down the hill to my right and I fired ....

#1 this deer was pissed --ready for a fight should have seen his back Hair, standing right up.
A- b/c I was grunting
B- b/c there was Doe scent in the air with Dominent Buck scent

#2 I had Planted a Dripper scrape 3/4 down the mountain out back of my treestand.

i agree with the million dollar question on buck scrapes......

I would consider myself a scrape hunter and rather then a rub hunter b/c scrapes are more of a here and now real time hunting and you can almost put any scrape in a time frame and make your own assumptions of where they are going, how big the deer might be, and how aggressive in the rut he might be.
YES , I AM A SCRAPE HUNTER

It's all about your amount of time in the woods. Rainy days, windy days, and even sundays when you can't hunt ..... time spent ...

Thanks to everyone! So far there's a ton of information on scrapes, as we all well know, I just want to hear from those "on ground" and what's work'n for them.

So the next question is: Do a lot of people make their mock scrape pre-pre-rut / pre-rut / rut and keep them going through out the season, or do you make your's during the actual time u are in the "stand"?

I guess the second would be a newer concept to me, because as I've always known, a person works a mock scrape prior to and through out the season.

Thanks again! and good luck to all!

I guess another question is: can a guy put out too many scrapes, say, in a hr, half a day, etc? Or should a couple be made/maintained every 3-4 days?

I would invest in a Dripper by wildlife research ... I have 3 out that hang over my Mock scrapes.
They only drip during the day per manufacturer to groom the deer to check it during the day .

You won't have to maintain them ...I wouldn't put more then 2 in a 1 mile area.

went out today and placed two Mock scrapes with a dripper on each . I have a 8 pt. buck "young 8 " running around scraping,, He looked to be about 160lbs. ..... saw him at 5am crossing a road and found 10 small 2x2 scrapes to 1x1 scrapes ... the game is on ....
