Hey all. How many of you actually bait? And not just hunt over someone elses bait, hire someone to let you hunt their bait sites?

Also private or public land?

And finally whats everyone using?

What state ?

Me, I am using fish-guts and Apples. On public land. Stared the first bait Sunday and its been hit pretty hard. I will post a pic if I ever get a reply and can figure out how to.

Hopefully the wife will bring home a trail cam like I asked her to.

Yes, we (my son-in-law & I) are bating bear. Put the bait out at noon last sunday and it was hit within eight hours. Trail cam shows multiple bears, possibly six or more hitting the bait. We opened the bait site with a bacon burn and dog food soaked in fryer grease(bears really like this!), sweet rolls, apples, meat scraps, vanilla pudding and chocolate frosting. The bears have torn apart a hollow stump that we dumped the greasy dog food into. We are using a digital trail camera this year and the pictures are fantastic! 174 shots the first two days -about half bears and half raccoons.

Idaho Joe, from Careywood as well, we emailed a couple years ago. Took my Bear with a bow 2 yrs ago with the Predator Call. Bear ran in and charged me twice and hung around me for about 45 minutes before I could get my shot.
I hunted over bait which I think held the bear. Bait was an old Apple tree with a small Pear tree nearby up in the woods. Did not hunt last year , but just got a picture from a trail cam of a huge boar.
All public forest service land north of Cocolala . Had another smaller bear at an elk wallow on the cam last week. They are out and feeding.
Calling my bear was the quickest I had ever seen a bear come in and it was not quiet about it at all. Give it a try. And I was out of the stand and on the ground face to face......shot was taken finally at 42 feet!
Trail cam is a great hunting tool and just plain fun to see what you get.

BBD thanks. Yeah i remember you were hunting black tail..
Are you hunting up there in boners ? I have been thinking for the last few years about giving it a shot up that way and try to find a big mulie buck to put on the wall. As they really aren't that great to eat. I am really hoping the Elk are back close to the house again this year.

My bait is getting hammered but I haven't had the time to go sit on it. I have been running the damn thing since the open and haven't hunted it once.. I have gone through so much bait and haven't even sat there once... I need to pick up a camera and at least get a photo of one.. wouldntcha?

We will see what happens.

Greetings ALL!
BBD and Idahojoe, I am just south of you in Athol.

I decided to get a bear tag this year to have with me in during the deer and elk hunt. However, after thinking through it, I am beginning to think that I want to plan a specific bear hunt before elk season opens.

I read in the Nickels Worth that a shop in Athol has bakery scraps they are selling as bear bait. Has anyone used that bait? I see some"recipes" posted here as well.

I am new in the panhandle, so I am still scouting where to go. I saw some bear scat and sign over near the little north ford of the CDA river, however I'd like to hunt closer to home.

Thanks for your articles and posts. If either of you are willing to hunt with a first time bear hunter, I'd appreciate a reply as I am not confident hunting solo yet.

skblake where abouts in Athol depending on where there are alot of quick little places, like the National Forest.

I am telling you, try the predator call for Bear. I used a fawn in distress call. There isnt much more excitement than having a big hungry bear come charging in. And they do come running in hard and mad.
Also...Idaho Joe..... I shot my Bull Elk this past Wednesday with my bow. Just north of Cocolalla.
Quick story.... didnt get out of the house until late, got out of my truck at 6:52 am and put my phone on silent. Walked a short way and cow called 3 times and heard a bull very close chuckle back. All I could do to get off the logging road and nock my arrow as he came out broadside at 45 feet. Double lunged him and he didnt go 100 ft. Nice 4x4 bull and my first. He was DOA and recovered bat 7:08 when I took the first pictures on my cell to send out!!! 16 minute hunt.
Anyhow, back to bear. All the pictures I have been getting on the cam are very early in the morning around 5 am. Although I shot my bear 2 yrs ago at 3 in the afternoon.

idahojoe, I live at HWY 95 and N Estates Drive, 1/4 north of the Chilco plant. I've drivine up Bunco and Ohio Match into the National Forest, but I don't know where to park and sit to find them.

After listening to BBD, I may try the predator call.

BBD, sounds like an exciting hunt. I am preparing for rifle season to open later this month. I'll be looking for my 2nd buck and first bull or cow.
