God has blessed me with one of the fairly rare VT non-resident moose tags (after several years of applying). I was the second hunter on a friend’s moose tag last year (he took a nice cow). I’m from upstate NY just over the border from Poultney and Fair Haven. I am not new to hunting. But I drew a tag several spots down on my preferred hunting area list. So I am not at all familiar with the area I drew. I did stay fairly close for a week several years ago. At that time I saw “moose crossing” signs and plenty of tracks. God willing THIS time I’ll see MOOSE and bring one home.

I drew an either sex tag in area E2 (East Haven, Ferdinand, Brunswick, Granby, Concord, Lunenburg, Victor etc.).
I would welcome any advice on where to find moose, or a good place to stay or any other local knowledge anyone is willing to share. I’m guessing hotels might be few and far between in that area. I don’t mind camping for the week of moose season if there is a camp ground or a spot to throw a tent mid - late October.

The moose season opens October 17th 2009. I’ll need to scout a bit in advance. In fact I’ll probably need a couple of scouting trips before the season opens.

Can anyone recommend a butcher? Where we hunted last year was a forest preserve that forbid motorized vehicles. So we hauled that cow moose out with manpower. Does anyone know if the same rules apply to E2? If so, does anyone know a teamster with a good team of horses to haul a moose? If motorized access is allowed is there a local logger that hauls moose? Other options?

Thanks in advance for ANY help or advice. Hopefully this will be my first moose, so I need all that I can get!
