On my goat hunt I packed in both rifle and compound bow. We camped at a major game crossing between two high mountain lakes. One day while one buddy and I were scaling around the surrounding peaks, three goats wandered into camp and within a few feet of my compound bow, resting aside a tree. My other buddy had stayed in camp to fish and relax, and eventually had to throw some things at the goats to keep them away from camp and causing mischief (they like to eat things, especially socks). If I had stayed with my bow I could have taken one of the goats with it. As it turned out, I got one of those goats, but at about 150 yd, with a rifle.

I am considering during an archery mt goat hunt. It is my carrot to get in the gym and workout regularly.

In fact, I am going over to a friends house tonight to watch some dvd's of someones goat hunts. I asked a question about goat hunting on another site and he sent me the dvd's of his hunt to either inspire me or convince me its not for me

SH - was your a DIY or did you go with an outfitter? What state or country?

hey guys sorry i havent really writen anything
i've never done a goat hunt and where i live in northern bc an open season
from mid august to early october has opened up for mnt goat (archery)

so ya like you guys are doing i was just wondering what ppl do to get ready for it, if you guys hit the gym or whatever.

i work in the bush here as a timber cruiser mostly on the coast so walking long distances isn't to new to me, but it always good to hear how far ppl hav to walk and what it was like

i'm looking forward to it
how have you guys found the videos to be, and do you know of a vedio that kinda goes through the hunt from start to finish roughly, not just kill shots

thanx guys

I am planning for a goat hunt in BC in 2010. I was going to do bow, but I found a friend who is a rifle hunter who wants to do it too so I am going to opt for my .270.

I've asked lots of questions on getting in shape and here is what I learned. Do cardio, but also do weight training especially for the legs. Strong legs are important as you'll have time to catch your breath, but you need leg strength for the steep climbs.

I am doing cardio, running hiking spin class and weight lifting focusing on my legs.

like i said i do alot of walking with work usally with 25lbs on my back for about 12hrs a day
but i think i should start doing some rec hiking with alot more weight on my back
i also do alot of kickboxing and juijitsu so that is alot of cardio in its own.
i gonna start to work out at the gym too, i have also started going to the pool(now that is a full body cardio workout holy crap)

how about archery shooting practice what kinda of distances do you guys practice like 80 yrds closer or farther?
and do you think altitude has a bearing on your shots with a bow at those distances.

I don't know about BC, but around here the goats are gonna be at 8000 ft elevation plus. So, if you're used to breathing air at sea level, the air (or lack of it) is going to be a factor.

There is almost no soil, just HARD granite, where we go after `em. It destroys footware. Get some good boots, break them in, and start rock hopping.

Steep terrain, cliffs, loose rock ... can mess with your sanity.

Goats are different than other big game.

You might get within 10 yards of a goat, or you might have a challenge getting any closer than 100. A mature goat might not let you get within hundreds of yards of him or her, or, might insist you move out of the way if you are in the way of where he/she is going.

I have been within 8 yards of several (mature billies and nannies). Distances less than that make me uncomfortable (sharp, shiny black horns) ... so I didn't get any closer.
