They are close to where I live. I have gone after them a couple of times but did not put a lot of effort into it. I have found that in the towns of Scott and Spafford down by the South end of Skaneateles Lake if you look to hunt "other" than deer season the farmers are pretty good with land access. |

Hi Bear thanks for getting back to me. Yes that confirms what I have heard about the town of Scott. I was thinking about Bear Swamp down that way might be a good piece of state land to give a try. I have heard there might be a population of about 300 to 500 of them ??? |

I live like 15 min from Bear Swamp, never seen any pig sigh there. There is a big pce of state land in Spafford (Spafford state forest I think?). It is between Skinny and Otisco lakes. That might be a better place to start looking on public land? On a map Spafford is just North of Scott. |

I didn't realize you guys had a growing population of boars in NY. I wonder how long it'll take before we start seeing them in Vermont and New Hampsire. I've heard of sightings in Southern NH, but they must be escaped pigs gone wild. |

From what I understand the population is growing .
Thanks Bear , I 'm going to look around down there and will let you know how I make out. I also heard of rumors of some activity in the Morgan Hill area. [/b] |

No , not yet . I have been down to the state land off Hewitt Rd. a couple of times. More scouting than hunting. I got a Cass Creek call for Xmas and going to give it a try this weekend . If it were a little closer I would try some bait, I'm in B'ville. It's fun , something different than ice fishing.
PS; I think we have common friends. My #2 guy works at Basspro |

in south texas where friends of mine have boocoo hogs they make a bait for the hog traps, take a 5 gallon bucket and fill 3/4 with shell corn, then fill with diesel fuel til the corn is covered. they let that sit til the corn has soaked up plenty of diesel then they bait the traps with it. brids and rodents wont touch the corn, the hogs go right in the traps.
they dont use it while i am there as i dont like the odea of it, but they tell me that is what works best. could be pulling my leg, probably arent.
i have called hogs in some in texas, but there is a fairly good hog bait that can be made, takes alot of time and some fair money but it generally works if the pigs are in the area.
i have a few hundred pounds of hog bait here if you want to get together and show me your part of the country give a ring, be nice to quill some hogs and not drive 35 hours to do it.
what's the DEC stance on hog whacking? nongame, no closed season, or off limits?
good luck and hunt right at night fall, they get real active right after dark. |

Yeah I know one of them anyways a good guy was just at my house for a New Years Party. Waiting for ice myself here. Today and tomorrow may lock some areas up good???
Slick
Nongame, no season, no limit. All you need is a valid NY hunting licence. DEC would rather they do not spread. Though I think it is a little to late for that? |

alright, twist my arm, bear, you win, when do we go whack them?
where are they exactly? central means so many things, people call utica 'upstate' and others call lake george and speculator the adirondacks. lol |

I hear ya slick, anyone that doesnt live in NYC calls where they live "upstate" or "northern" NY. Not that I could blame any one of them for it.
For me (just my opinion) there is:
-The City
-Southern NY
-Central NY
-Northern NY
-and just maybe Western NY?
Not going to put landmarks too them and offend anyone though
The pigs right now are in the area around the South end of the Eastern most Finger lakes (ie, Otisco and Skaneateles). Right now I do not know anyone that has gone pig crazy (but I am sure there are a few?). Most are taken during the deer season. None of the land owners like them so I am not sure how baiting will be tolerated (they might think that it would attract more swine?) |

that's a good four hour drive for me but sure, why not, after all it's "free meat" LOL.
boundaries are simple, from long lake north to rt 458 over to childwold, and east to redford is the adirondacks, the rest to the north is 'new york state',
everything else is "jersey".
albany, lake george, old forge or new jersey, what's the difference? |
