all i have for coyotes is a savage 308 im shooting a reload in 150gr bt sierra (green tip) traveling at about 2400fps just wondering if anyone has used a biger cal for coyotes than the standard coyote round and if anyone has used a 308 for this application and what would be a good reload or factory load for coyotes in 308

use a very light for cal load, I beleive .308 has a 110, 125 gr loads(factory ammo) you will be OK.

i am not sure if remington offers the reduced recoil for .308 or not, but for the 30-06 it does not do to bad for coyote

pelt damage may be significant if you hit the shoulder bone

If thats all you have then roll with it. But I would try to go with a little lighter bullet. The .308 IMO is a little much for yotes. I have seen .243's do a bit of damage to yotes. Just try to stay away from shoulder shots they just plum ruin the pelt

I'll be using my 45/70 and 50 cal T/C later in the winter. Consider it good practice with your hunting rifle. If you're planning on keeping the pelt though, it wouldn't hurt to find something smaller. Besides, any excuse to get another rifle is a good one indeed. I wouldn't mind trying out one of those 22-250's, or even adding a .222 to the collection.

Hornady has a 110gr available. I'm not sure how much. It's listed as tactical home defense, but looking at the ballistics I bet it'd be right at home in the field with coyotes.

I believe Remmington used to make an accelerator round for the .308. the bullet wt was around 50 - 55 gr I think. I just saw in my Sportman's Guide that they are making this round for 30-30 as well.

I'll be using my 308 for starters on coyote and will most likely get a box of the 30-30 accelerators and give them a go in my 94.

I was a .22-250 fan, but a few years ago I converted to a .308 for my coyote work and I love it...of course I do population control for ranchers and am not concerned about the pelts. The big, heavy bullet puts them down hard, and gives you a little margin for error on those occasions when the shot doesn't go quite where you want it to, and it bucks the wind extremely well on those long shots. Overkill, yes. Wounded and/or lost dogs, no.

I handload 150 grain nosler ballistic tips, however before I got the handloading equipment my rifle liked the plain vanilla 150 grain remington corelokts.

Don't sweat the small stuff. Try using a winchester supreme ballistics silver tip in a 168grn. If you are hitting them from under 600yds, these polycarb tip rounds will cut right through them without doing any real pelt damage. The round will carry enough energy to suck half his guts out the 1/4 inch exit hole. However; as with any round you use, there's a down side... if you are under 300yds these rounds hit with enough velocity that the little bugger won't even realize he's been hit and the chase is on. Hope you have some tracking skills. I had to learn the hard way on that one... 4 miles through some of the s*@#est brush you could dream of.

If you're loading your own, try hornaday's 110gr V-max. I shot a coyote with one this weekend from about 80 yards and droped him where he stood. I hit him in the shoulder quartering toward me and had a quarter size exit just in front of his rear leg. Awsome bullet. I don't keep pelts so not interested in damage just getting them dead, but would have taken minimal sewing. I've seen much larger exit wounds from a .243 and love my .308, so am sticking with it.

They're only coyotes. I've used a 300 mag on 'em. Unless you want the pelts, which I don't, any caliber to kill them is good. I normally use a 22-250 or 223.

Here's a good coyote. 22-250, 275 yards.

Wow that bobcat is big too. You got some healthy predators there.

Love the bobcat.
