I know that I am placing my head on the chopping block, but here goes !
I as a hunt preserve owner would like to share my opinion; to me a fair chase hunt requires enough woodland cover for the animal to easily avoid human contact, I don't consider large fenced in clear cuts as fair chase. In some cases it might take a thousand acres to give the animal enough cover and in some areas fifty acres of heavily forested land will do the job. The preserve should offer enough cover , that it is possible for the animal to avoid hunters each and every time he is pursued. Most people who object to preserve hunting, have never hunted one, and yet they are experts at condemning them, where did they get there expertise. A properly run preserve offers a hunt for those who have little time, no land to hunt on, or perhaps they have a physical limitation. Maybe they just want a nice trophy, bottom line is we do offer a real hunt , as a life time hunter I look to provide a real challenging hunt, and a facility that the animal can disappear within seconds ........Like I said , I just put my head on the chopping block, so chop away!
Respectfully, Mark Luce

The Best time for fall colors will vary, last season it was mid September to early October........ Most of the rut has some color to it.......It is a nice time of the year to be in Maine.....Thanks for the inquiry.
P.S. I just saw your posting date on this question, sorry it took me so long to get back to you but we have been busy fighting off a bill before our legislature, that would have shut down all hunt preserves in Maine. We were successful during the hearing process to convince the Agriculture Committee that this would be a great economic loss to the deer and elk farming industry in Maine and local community's surrounding the preserves......They killed the bill in committee, it's gone for two years. We had the support of The Sportsman's Alliance of Maine, The Maine Bow Hunters Accoc. and the Maine Farm Burreau along with several feed producer's, deer farmer's and of coarse the Preserve owners. .....So that's why I'm late responding to this Q, The hearing was yesterday 2/24/03 I'll do better next time. Mark Luce

It is 9 below zero this morning here in Newport, summer sounds good to me.....Look forward to hearing from you in the future......Mark

I AM NEW TO THIS WEB PAGE BUT YOU STUCK YOUR HEAD OUT SO ITS MY DUTY TO CHOP IT OFF I STRONGLY APOSE THE HUNTING ON PRESERVES WHEN I FIRST STARTED HUNTING 23 YRS AGO I WENT ON A HOG HUNT IN TN I WAS USED TO CHASING ANIMALS IN THE MOUTAINS WHERE THEY COULD GO AS FAR OR WIDE AS THEY WANTED I WAS DISCUSTED THAT THE ANIMALS WERE HUNTED IN THIS WAY THEY WERE RUN ROUND AND ROUD THE ENCLOSURE 8 MILES OF FENCE BYE THE WAY BUT THESE HOGS DIDNT HAVE A CHANCE THEY JUST HAD TIME IF IT CAME DOWN TO IT THE OWNER WOULD PULL OUT ALL THE STOPS AND BRING THE DOGS IN TO INSURE YOU GET YOUR HOG !! IT JUST PUT A BAD TASTE IN MY MOUTH I LEFT NOT PAYING AND REFUSED TO HUNT ANOTHER DAY I WAS INVITED BY A FRIEND THAT CLAIMED TO BE A REAL HUNTER
HE KILLED A SITKA BLAK BUCK I THINK IS WHAT IT WAS CALLED. THIS THING WAS RELEASED THE IN THE SAME INCLOUSURE THE HOGS WERE IN IT WASNT THERE THAT MOURNING SO IT MUST HAVE BEEN RELEASED THAT AFTERNOON THE OWNER SO CALLED GUIDE PLACED A STAND AND THEY PUSHAED THIS THING BY HIM HE SHOT IT WITH A 7MM 10 YRDS I WOULD HAVE BEEN AFRAID TO BEEN AS CLOSE TO THIS ANIMAL AS THEY WERE WHILE THIS IDIOT SHOT IT NOW MABE NOT ALL YOU GUYS DO IT THIS WAY BUT IF THIS IS HUNTING ILL JUST HAVE TO GO HOME EMPTY HANDED ITS THE EXPERIANCE NOT JUST THE KILL OR THE TROPHY ALOT OF PEOPLE DONT EVER GET TO REALY INJOY
HUNTING THEY HAVE TO KILL OR ITS NOT A SUCESS IVE BEEN ON MANY HUNTS THAT THE ANIMAL GOT THE BEST OF ME AND YOU KNOW THOSE ARE SOME OF MY MOST MIMRABLE HUNTS MABE NOT EVERYONE THIKS THIS WAY BUT REAL HUNTERS HUNT PS YOU ASKED FOR IT!! |

Thank you for your comments, but you must realize that not all preserves are the same. We have a single species preserve that we maintain a small herd in. The forest is dense and the challange is real. They are surely more of a hunt than you suspect. There are more dispicable things than a person who harvest their own food, via in the wild or in a preserve!:) Have a nice day.........

| THERE MAY BE WORSE THINGS THAN HARVESTING YOUR ON FOOD BUT THIS TYPE OF HUNTING IS JUST GIVING THE ANTIS MORE AMUNITION TO USE AGAINST US WORSE THINGS ARE NOT WHATS TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT ITS THE ETHICS OF THE ACT WE AS HUNTERS HAVE A RESPONSABILTY TO OUR SELVES TO DO THINGS THE RIGHT WAY SORRY BUT THATS JUST THE WAY I SEE IT AND YOU KNOW AS WELL AS I THAT THE MEAT IS THE LEAST PRIORITY ON MOST HUNTERS MINDS SURLEY YOU DONT DISAGREE WITH THAT YOU HAVE A NICE DAY |

| It is far more ethical that an animal in a preserve be dispatched without knowing it's fate, vs. capturing, and trucking to a slaughter house............ Our traditional way of obtaining meat for our table is far more unethical than any hunt within a preserve........Have you ever worked in a slaughter house, I have. I've seen the terified look in the eyes of animals that are about to meet there certain fate...ETHICS, think again!:).... Any time the anties convince a true hunter that what we do is wrong, they WIN and that's just what they want, division between hunters! The truth be it, they want to stop any and all forms of hunting, period!!!! |

I thought about the arguments for and against hunting on preserves. Actually, in my studies in anthropology and ancient human societies - preserve hunting in many ways is similar to how game was once hunted. Sport hunting is relatively recent for the mass public. Kings and royalty used to hunt for "sport" in ways that we would condemn. Ancient tribes and clans would use natural features to funnel game into killing zones. Pygmies of Africa use nets and beaters to surround game and drive game to killing zones. I read an account of merry ole England hunts where horses and dogs were used to drive deer to posted archers. Often fences and nets were set up to provide some form of barrier to increase the odds of a kill. Those who choose to hunt on preserves are probably participating in a form of hunting that is far older than the modern "sport" hunting. Of course, sport hunting is in the eye of the beholder. In Germany, boar are shot at night from stands. That is illegal in the US. In Finland, dogs and beaters drive moose to stands where hunters wait with rifles. We prefer to call them. In parts of the US bait is used to attract bears but considered illegal in other parts. What is "sporting"?
