I read in this months Outdoor Life about Jim's toughest hunt ever, which was for desert bighorn. In a small sidebar he states that Montana's Unit 501 has unlimited sheep permits. I checked on the Montana website and couldn't find this to be true. What gives?

If you talking Desert Sheep, There aren't any in Montana. Area 501 if it's where I think it is, used to but unlimited permits for sheep and goats. But there is a catch to it. It's probally the most remote and rugged country in the U.S. Also I think if was foot entry and the season started about the same time as early snow.

If that's the unit, I strongly suggest you be one hell of a physical specium and have life insurance. You'll hike in a long ways and need to carry EVERYTHING you need on your back. You are a young man, right?

the article was about his desert bighorn hunt but the side bar was about RM bighorns. Thanks for the ifo about the terrain. I am young but not in shape  When I do go for sheep some day I'll be prepaired and probably pay to hunt in Alberta
