You're off to the right start.
ask questions:
ask them for references, lots of them, then call them and ask questions.
Maineguide, how does the association work in ME?
is it required to join?
Here in NY a few newly arrived guides that couldn't make it on their own reputation banded together to make NYSOGA( New York State Outdoor Guides Association).
here, and just here in the northern adirondacks mind you, it's pretty much a sign you can't make it on your own if you are a member of NYSOGA. keep in mind you only have to sign your name to get a guide's license here, it isn't nearly as demanding as it should be. that's why most 'guides' here are really a prison guard or painter or car salesman, who also guides.
Maine isn't like that from what we hear, so you're already ahead in the game.
feel free to print out our page "How To Hire a Guide" and use it.
it's at http://www.GuidesForHire.com look on the button bar to the left.

AdkGuidesForHire, I am a member here but it is not a requirement. I joined because they lobby at the state house for different laws that will help a working guide.
Also we can get great deals from different venders thruout the state.
The Maine Guide Asso. has a booklet that goes all over the world that member guides can advertise in.
It does have a lot of benifits which are a big help. |
