| Rondo, Welcome aboard. I didn't know Texas had any sheep. How hard is it to get a tag? |

20 were brought in the 80's to restock. There just under a 1000 now. There are only a half dozen tags offered each year. (Slowly increasing) They issue some to the land owners to do what they want with them and a couple are auctioned off for fund raising for increasing the herd. Last tag went for I believe $104,000

I won my hunt through Texas Parks and Wildlife.

| WOW! 104,000 dollars! some years ago they auctioned off a desert tag in Nevada and some guy from Utah bought it for over 90k. I don't know if all this is a good thing or not. While I understand it brings in a great amount of revenue for the state, it also places a very high value on the animals. I would guess that if states got together and set a price of say 25k on a sheep tag, they'd sell them all. |

unit 501 in montana has unlimited rocky mountain sheep tags. all OTC. but there's a quota. so the season is closed once the quota in reached.
you could do the hunt there for under $1000. take a good FM radio to check for season updates.
as long as you're organized, it might be an easy hunt. i have been to that unit and seen sheep before, a successfull hunter would be wise to go out 2 days before the season starts with a spotting scope, and geared up to make a spike camp some where, find the sheep, follow them around until the season starts, then wake up at sun up, and hunt one down. remember though, pack dry foods, nothing you'd have to make a fire to cook. |

Yes, I am keeping my eye on those Montana Unlimited Hunts.
Sound tough - that's what makes them sound exciting. |

| Awsome site chiefs. Sorry for getting off topic. Chiefs what was the most difficult Trophy size north american deer spieces to hunt? The reason i ask is because not many people have had the chance to hunt all of them. Where did your columbian black tails come from? How about the axis? Once agian sorry for getting off topic. Thanks in advance. |

Thanks for the comments on the site. I have been fortunate to have taken all the deer species and they all have thier iniqueness. Whether it be the terrain, weather, other animals you may enocunter or difficulty in judging a trophy quality animal. I have enjoyed them all. My Columbia Blacktail was taken with Muzzleloader on a special draw tag in Oregon. I , like most of us still enjoy hunting Big Whitetails, and they always provide a unique challenge. With the Sitka's, on Kodiak you have the element of weather, terrain and then the most significant being the other inhabitants of the Island, specifically the Brown Bear, which adds an element of interest of which you can only imagine. Jim Shockey killed a couple with me, including the new #2 with a muzzleloader and that Island provides some fantastic memories.
One of my Favorite deer to hunt are the Coues Whitetails, having only hunted them in Sonora and Chihuahua in Mexico, I can only say they are an unforgettable experience, and one that if you are interested in hunting during the peak of the rut, with optics, and watching bucks openly chase does during the day, will become addicting to most any avid hunter. Again thanks for the comments on the site. Take Care. |
