Hi everyone, I just found your forum and it is full of great stuff.
The reason I am writing is that I am starting to plan a moose hunt and would appreciate anyone's input. I live in upstate NY ( please do not hold that against me : ) and would like to be able to drive rather than fly. So far I am thinking of Newfoundland . From what I read the success rate is quite high and there are a ton of outfitters there. My other choice would be nothern Ontario . The packages seem a little cheaper but I think there are fewer moose there.
I am also wondering ,if successful, what is the best way to bring meat home. Should I plan on a large insulated box to bring it home in 1/4's or is it better to have it cut up there and bring it home in small coolers?
Another question is I plan on using a 350 rem mag with 200 gr factory loads. I do not reload and that is the only bullet Remington loads. Do you think it would be a good choice ? Black bear might also be an option for me there also. Any input on this topic would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, ADK Jim |

Welcome Jim I like the first three letters of your name 8-) I grew up in the Northern part of the state. Still hunt up there but have since moved to central NY. You know the work thing and all.
Have never been Moose hunting. Am going this fall up into Quebec. This would even be a shorter drive for you than Onterio. The Quebec rules are different, the main one being that there is only one tag per 2 hunters but the sucess rate seems to be around 50 to 60 % so statisticly it should work out? Besides being a shorter trip than Newfoundland or Onterio the price is a lot better also. 4 of us are going and the trip (not including food or transport there) is $800 per hunter. Is this a great deal? Don't know will let you know end of September when I get back. |

| Hi Bear , well I'm out side of Syracuse but do a lot of deer and bear hunting in the Newcomb area . Not a lot of them there but when you do see one it usually a good one. Thanks for the input and good luck in Canada. |

| Well, as far as a Nfld hunt goes, your Outfiter/Guide can answer all your question better than I. Some folks even take a deep freeze and small generator. Check with Canadian Firearm Centre for info on bringing your firearms in, should be no problem. |

I've been to Newfoundland twice for moose. Every thing about the hunt (both times) went well. Good people, good accomodations, good opportuity at an animal (I'm one for two), all promises kept.
I flew to get there, and I am no big fan of Air Canada, but my gear and rifle arrived with me.
I would definately book a Newfoundland hunt, and can recommend Newfoundland Wilderness Outfitters very highly.
Your rifle should do the job well. |

| Hi DaveF, I was just at there web site and it does look good. Word of mouth seems the best way to pick an outfiter. How about bear in that area? Did you see any or any taken ? I was thinking of maybe a combo moose /bear as long as I was there. Thanks for the reply, Adk Jim |

The man who owns Newfoundland Wilderness Outfitters is Ray Saunders.
He will set up a hunt for moose, bear,and/or woodland caribou. I have only gone for moose. I have seen a decent number of black bear when I have been there, even though I wasn't really looking for them. Same with caribou.
My experience with this outfitter has been outstanding. All the guides have a strong knowledge of the area, the game, and how to find it.
Huntinfo.com has feedback from many hunters about many outfitters. Take a look, but I would suggest you talk to Ray. Both of my trips had a group of 5 from my area, we will all go back.
If you do speak to him, mention this forum. I'm pretty sure he check it from time to time.
BTW, this ebay auction is a moose from that area. Cut and paste the link. The taxidermist did my moose, and does good work.

Your lucky you have 5 guys to go with. The guys I hunt with don’t have the interest or $ to make the trip. I am definitely going to look into wilderness Outfitters. Thanks again, Jim |

Hi, I livein Hammondsport. Will be in Newfoundland, at the Hideaway Lodge, for the opening of the rifle season in September. I plan on using a Whelen, but I would not feel bad about using the 350 Mag. I am surprised about the lack of bullet selection, it is a great cartridge. I have shot a lot of whitetails & 2 mule deer with the 200 grain bullet, and have yet to recover a bullet, or have to track a deer (I didn't miss any!). Get comfortable shooting your rifle, and go on your hunt. That 35 cal bullet will do its job if you tuck it into the proper spot.
Sept. 10 is starting to get close! |

Hi Fishdog , the worst thing about hunting season is that you wish your summer away. I think summer should come after Fall : )
The Whelm and the 350 mag are close. Your right the lack of bullet selection is a draw back. Years ago I had a Rem mod 600 in 350mag and am still fond of the caliber . I just bought a model 7 and will use it up north for deer and bear and hopefully moose in the future . Good luck on your trip and please post your results. Thanks, ADK Jim |
