The article is true at least for the region I'm originally from (literally right on the forest fringe near Torch River, SK). Moose were starting to get quite plentiful and were even being occasionally seen in the farmland. In the last 3 years I've been home though I haven't even seen a track. I hope this helps.

Wow, I didn't realize that tick infestation could hit a moose herd so hard.

I'm not sure if its ticks, over-hunting, hard winters or predation. I just know the moose population in our municipality is way down after starting to make something of a comeback (there were never very many to begin with - now there's practically none). I'll support just about anything that will bring them back.

The moose population in Saskatchewan might be on the down fall, but scientifically there is no proof. Ticks, over hunting, and natural death to predators are all major factors to moose populations. The tick infestation is one of the bigger causes these last couple of years, because of the low precipitation in the province. In order to actualy find out if moose numbers are actually falling we must do a population study. If the population is suffering we should close the hunting season for a few years or we could damage the moose populations greatly.
