I took my 11 year old nephew out for the youth turkey hunt on sat 4/8. When we left the truck it was pouring rain, but this was not going to stop him from going, he was pumped up tp go. I should take a step back and mention that last year the toms got the best of us. He still had a blast though.
Anyway on our first set up we get a response way off. So we relocate and set up again under some trees to hide a bit from the rain. On the first set of yelps,
we get three birds to respond. As we are sitting there I can see the excitement building with each response we get. Finally one flies down. We can see him up on the ridge and I can tell it is a jake> I ask him if he wants to try for that bird or look for a bigger one. I know the answer before he even responds. So I go back to working this bird and he is putting on a bit of a show.
Finally he commits and starts working his way down the ridge towards us. My nephew is really starting to shake now. I tell him to just relax, the bird has a long way to come. No sooner than I said that, he takes off flying right at us. He lands just over the ridge from us, and I tell him to get that gun ready. No sooner than he had it up on his knee, we could see his head peeking up over the hill. I tell him to wait for a clear shot, then when he is ready to take him. As they say, the rest is history.
I have never been more excited about a turkey hunt than that one. None of my birds I have harvested even come close. If you guys have an opportunity to take a kid out, do it. You won't regret a sigle minute of it. I have made a hunting partner for life. |
