I am trying to book a guide, he has a hunt for Oct 15th open and a Rut hunt for 2008. Is one better than the other? I also heard that the meat is not as good during the rut, is this true?
first time moose hunt, thanks

The Moose rut begins during the full moon in September. That's the best time for calling moose.
A bull thatis in rut and searching will travel great distances day and night, ultimately resulting is loss of body fat, so there may be some merit to the meat theory. In an area where is an abundance of moose, there shouldn't bea problem.
IAll game should be hung by the rear quarters to allow proper drainage of blood (especially moose) If they don't do it that was, demand it, it's your moose and your money
Never met a moose I didn't like :) :) :) |

Where are you looking to hunt and who are you booking with? Just curious.
Rut will certainly be easier to call and if you are hunting AK they are pretty hard to find before then as they are in the mountainous areas. When it starts to get cold they come down to the flats. |

| The hunt is in BC with Leeham Outfitters (nothing booked yet). I am looking for a moose for my wife. We both bow hunt elk, but were thinking we should go rifle for our first Moose hunt. All of the outfitters in the area that I talked to say that we would see more in the rut, but that overall success is the same in every season. I just don't want to make a $10,000 mistake! |

didja meant when sept 17th rolls around, the bulls will be where-ever the cows are???
Temps will dictate where a bull will be, season wide.........
Untill they wanna pound on some cow meat that is.
The moose rut does not co-incide with the temps. It is all daylight.
Period.... |

| I was refering to both situations. Calling should be good during the rut. But Bulls will be alltogether hard to find before the cold hits and they start coming out of the mountains. Period. |

Is it a float trip or a drop trip?
Ever give any consideration to hunting for a trophy bull in AK?
The bodies and the racks are much larger on the average.
I sell hunts in both places and we have a higher success rate and bigger racks (averaging about 56") in AK
Just some food for thought.
There is a site I ran accross a while ago that has a listing of loads of outfitters and guides and people post thier good or bad input about them. Pretty informative. If I run accross it again I'll post it here so you might look up your outfitter.

Adventures, - Ok, understood. I see what you were trying to say now.
I think we are both right on this one here.
