I've never been first to post in topic area before so I thought I'd give it a go.
Can anybody give a recommendation to a guy that has never hunted Caribou before where to start?
I'm not a wealthy guy but it is on my list of things to do before I kick the bucket (no hurry). I think (?) I'd like to go to Alaska and try with my bow.

I personally have not taken a caribou but I have been in caribou country (northern alaska). I was amazed when I saw my first one at about 50 yards. Reminded me of pronghorn with their body mass, i.e. I had imagined they would be bigger.

I have two acquaintences that have taken carbiou. One in British Columbia and the other in Alaska.

The one in British Columbia arranged the hunt through a guide and the guide took care of arranging the tags, flying in, etc and they bagged a few. I imagine the trip wasn't cheap.

Saskatchewan, the Yukon Territories, and Manitoba have Caribou. Probably other provinces do as well.

The other guy I know lived about an hour north of Fairbanks AK for a few years. There they have herds of Caribou and licensced hunting. My friend just went with another guy who knew where to go, no need for a guide. Matter of fact he tells this great story of bringing home this frozen caribou (it was late fall and really cold already) to his new wife who had never been around wild game before (dead or alive) and they both had to butcher it indoors because they didn't have anywhere else that was warm enough to thaw the meat for butchering... I guess she took it pretty well, but I think he was really pushing his luck. :smile:

The fairbanks option maybe something to consider since you could fly (or even drive) to Anchorage and then drive to Fairbanks which I think was about 2 hours. Probably could do the whole thing over a months time. Especially if you flew into anchorage then rented a vehicle.

Its an Awesome experience. You can sneek right up on them easily within 100 yards on some occasions....others when there are thousands wandering the barrens they can be all around you like your not even there.

several years back my friend and I put a trip together ourselfs. We did the reserch flew to anchorage caught a float plane flew in about 4 hour they dropped us off we were on our own. Had a BLAST !!!!!!! We each shot a nice caribou. whole trip was a little over $2500 I'd go back anytime. If you are interested I can find the phone # of the float plane outfit.

I can provide Outfitters from Newfoundland, Labrador, and NWT as well, that offer caribou.

I have hunted caribou on four occasions in Quebec, the last time being with Club Chambeaux who were the best. The advice I give you wherever you hunt is to talk to several people who hunted caribou with the outfitter. My wife and I are considering Peterson's Point Lake Lodge for caribou this year with the North American Life Member hunt. Otherwise I would take her to Club Chambeaux for her first caribou hunt. They deliver what they say, their camps are good and they will place you where there are caribou. In 2002, my camp of twelve hunters harvested 24 bulls, several were archery. Good luck wherever you decide and again, be sure to check out past clients and web sites that post hunt reports. All claim to have caribou. All claim to move you to a more productive area if there are no caribou in your camp. Trouble is some outfitters don't have caribou in any of their camps because they can not afford the expense to have camps sitting empty. Good Luck!
