hunter777,
I have enough trapping stories already. I'm glad I don't have one of being caught in a 330 in -10 weather. I did have a big double spring go off on me once and it took me 10 minutes of wading through a swamp before I found some ground solid enough for me to step on to release the springs. I now know what our game feels....nothing because my hand went numb and I lost all feeling in it. |

My friend, who been trapping for decades made a gizzmo that he wears over his shoulder and connects to the trap when he bends over. By then standing erect, the springs are released(or something like that).
He's a forum member( the nail) and I'll have him post some info for you.
Hiker:, You could make a cup of coffee nervous ::-k ::-k ::-k |

Hiker , this is the nail I heard you got tangled up with a 330 .I made a divice out of a peice of roap. I used a 1/2 inch nylon roap The length depends on your size .I braded a loop in it big enough to go around your shoulder and under your arm fairly close to your elbow .I put a good sized S hook on it . You feed the roap through the top ring of the spring of the trap and hook the bottom ring and stand up until the spring compresses and with the free hand you put the lock on .I proof tested this a few times and it works great .If this dont make any sence to you .I'll see if hammer 1 will take a pic with his new dig camera and E maill it to ya
BE A SAFE TRAPPER DON'T TAKE CHANCES .THIS WONT WORK UNDER THE ICE thenail |

Hiker , the hammer and I go back a long way and we hunt and fish and do a bit of trapping together .Hope I could be of some help . I know the feeling of the 330 on the arm been there done that . I was lucky to have my son with me to help with the chore of getting that 330 of my arm .I was like the coyote . I only had to get stung once .That contraptcion really works well . You will have to make it to fit your self . You have to get very close to the trap to get it hooked into place and then raise your body to compress the springs . Put the lock on with your free hand . Something to play with while wating for the season..Happy trapping ,

Hiker, It's thenail again .I read your post about the trap on you hand .It sounds like it was a leghold not a conibear .I was thinking conibear .footholds aren,t that bad to remove but the 330 is a different story .I put one on my arm and took it off 4 times my self .I had a friend trapper with me of corase just in case it failed but it worked great .Any way enough about being caught . What kind of set do you use for coyote ? I like the mound set where trap is about 4 feet from the lure .I set the trap on top of the mound and make a hole with a bar about 4 feet away and add some hawbecker fox food lure .I like to put some old brush on top of the hole that really gets the cureosity going and he wants to see what is there and really works the set and gets up as high as they can for a look .This set works the same for foxes .Sorry I got confused about the traps .Any way it wont hurt to have the release tool just in case .The mound set avoids a lot of non target animals

Hunter 777, The coyote is something like the fox . the only thing is I don't use is the drag hooks I 've lost a few traps with animals in them .They left the country .Now I use a drag pole about 6 or 7 feet long and use a 2 inch staple to anchor the trap to the pole I use 5 feet of chain and the first bush they come to they're tangled .Haven't lost any more since .The coyote is one tough animal .The coyote in NS is larger than the ones out west . They call our coyote a brush wolf .It 's between a western coyote and a wolf and they're tough .THe pole should be big enough to hold the 2 inch staple .I like to leave a few short twigs on the pole when you cut the branches off .I also like to use good solid dead wood THey have no fear of a pole .If there Is any more I can help you with on the coyote feel free to ask .

| I will be trapping in NJ and Pa. We have some pretty big coyotes too. I have my #3's(new duke coil springs) set up for double 1/2" x 18" rebar and I was going to stake them solid. In NJ we can only use snares. Thats OK, I like snares but there just isn't as many coyotes there as Pa but there are plenty of red fox. I did see some sign of a few coyotes on my trapping grounds and tried to catch them but no luck in the snares. This year I plan to concentrait my efforts in Pa and use the footholds. There was a nice black coyote that I saw last summer on the forest road in the woods right behind the house. |

| In NJ the main critters (that I trap for) are red fox and coon and in Pa the main (target) critters will be grey fox and coyote. What critters are you guys trapping? |

When I set snares for coyote I like to camoflage the top of the snare with ferns or small brush and find that if they see the top of the snare the will shy away from it .Another thing is to set the snare on a trail and look for a hole off to the sides and set the snare there as they see the snare in the middle of the trail but the ones off to the side are not on there mind And that really works .Don't be shy with the wire . WE trap just about all the fur bearers WE have no pine martin here but every thing else I was't heavy on the trapping the last few years .but plan to get into it good this year .

Those are some good tips(setting the holes off to the sides) and I will use them. That makes perfect sense to me.
There are a lot of deer around here, if I camo the top with a stick or vine do you think the deer will duck into the snare? |

Hunter777, when I set my snares I usually block off trails in the woods and lean a pole across the trail and attatch my snare to it and let them go with the pole .I use the finer wire for cat and fox , not so easy to see .with the pole drag they dont go anywhere.Set it low enough so the deer step over the set .This set really works good with the snares off to the sides
