WesternHunter- Very cool that someone actualy found a use for coots!! How many livers does it take to make a lab breakfast?
Woodyard Good guess but I have got to dissagree.
There are 5-genera and around 18 to 20 species of grebe in the world. North America has 7 different species of grebe -Horned, Pie-Billed, Western, Clarks, Least, Eared and Red-Necked-. All of these are about the size of a robin. With a web search you can get photos of them to compair to the bird being talked about here. There are a lot of similar features esp in the feet and heads but colors and size are a big factor. |

ADKBEAR have you ever seen a grebe? or are you just going by what you read on the web? That by no means is a MUD DUCK (coot) it is a grebe. Also not to sound much like Im picking fights but bnow0707 why are you shooting when you don't know what your shooting at ? |

Thanks for backing me up on this. I've been around waterfowl better than 40 years and I know a grebe when I see one. It's not the pie-billed, the one I commonly see in Illinois, but it is a grebe. Calling this thing a coot reminds me of one of the funniest things I've ever seen duck hunting. I was in the check station at a public hunting area in downstate Illinois when a nitwit from Chicago walks in, plops down a coot and a pie-billed grebe, both very dead, and says," Got two, a drake and a hen." Every one else was still laughing when the possum cop shows up 20 minutes later to write him a ticket. This is my last word on this subject except to add that you should know what you are shooting before you pull a trigger. |

It does kind of sound like you are trying to pick a fight. So good luck with that, tends to be frowned upon here.
Woodyard that is a funny story. If it is somehow aimed at myself that is too bad since I feel we were having a conversation with dissagreeing ideas like adults will have.
I still say this is a coot. The only greb it looks like is the "Least Grebb" If this is a least greb it is a world record, size and weight since it is the tinyest of the grebs. But hey that is my opinion and you know what they say about opinions.
Luck I am all done here |

Hey fellas sorry I ain't been round in a while. Just to answer the ? above as too why I shot it. The way we hunt is by floatin creeks, since the timber and bigwater ducks aren't that plentiful around here. So in the process we usually run into more wood ducks than anything. Sometimes they will let you pass by then fly out behind you. Which is what this "thing" did. I pulled up think it was a hen wood duck (which are legal) and shot.
Anyways thanks for the replies, didn't mean to start anything here! |
