Robert; The late Jack O"Connor of Outdoor life Mag. Took many trophy bears with the 30-06.In the hands of a good rifleman the 30-06 will get the job done.

"Stop" can be a relative term. If you shoot the bear and he dies ten minutes later, you've stopped him. Of course, if he's reduced you to hamburger by then, does it count?

A lot depends on the size of the bear, range of the shot, and bullet placement. It can sometimes take awhile for a grizzly to realize it's dead, so best bet is generally to go for the shoulders to pin him down until he figures it out. Use a premium bullet that'll hold together and penetrate. An '06 with a high weight rentention bullet would probably work for a typical interior Alaska or Lower 48 grizzly if the range wasn't too long and you had the drop on the bear.

-Yep!..........and I always pack a .44 mag along with my .338.......but, you're right -shot placement, grain, bullet construction...........and a griz is different from a brown bear........

I lived in AK 74-98 and took grizz--SE brown bera and several blacks with my 06--used 180 gr Core Lokts for blacks and 220 RN Corelokts for brown and grizz--no problems although I later went to using a Rem 416 when guiding and either a 338 or 300 WM for all bears except brownies over bait where i used a 45/70 shooting 350 or 400 grainer FN Speer bullets pushed by 44-47 grs of R7

That post was from 2005 and talked like that had happened the week before, yet I recall in 2001 getting an email attachment of those exact same pictures, even saved them and the date show Sept 2001. No doubt it happened, just that the guy is adding this story like it just happened.
