|
|
To whom it may concern:
My name is Steve, I live and work in Ulster County, NY. I've had my hunting licence for three years and have yet to go hunting. I'm just looking for land where I can legaly deer hunt. None of my freinds or family hunt, I've gotten into this on my own. I just don't want to wander out in the forest and get lost. I am more than willing to hunt public or state land-just need a map/guide, or I don't mind paying to use someone's private land.
Any help will be much apreciated in this matter. Thank you. |

I'm not from the area but there must be some smaller pieces of public land near the hudson and certainly you can hunt the catskills.
Are you looking for someone to guide you or are you willing to give it a try on your own if you can find a piece of land to hunt? Firearm deer/bear is opening soon isn't it? |

I'm willing to hunt any place I can. I'd go alone but I'm not real sure of what to do. Even if I get a deer, I've never gutted one-yea it sounds easy but I'd like someone who's done it before to be there if I could. And then I only weigh 125 lbs, how am I going to move the thing. And then what what exactly do I do with the carcass anyway? Any help will be much appreciated. |

Alright, you are doing some of the learning that you need to do already. Take some time and look through your phone book. You can find butchers that will cut and wrap the deer so that you can freeze it for up to one year (I recomend eating it within 7-8 months but it will be fine if you don't finish it all before that.
Gutting the deer is pretty easy. There is a link on here that shows this in detail. If I come across it later on tonight I will repost it in this thread.
I am pretty good a finding public hunting land on the internet. I will see if there is anywhere near your town thats open to the public. Just about anywhere in the eastern US has good deer hunting.
Moving the deer.......Nobody ever said that was easy! Bring your cell phone and call a buddy, Tag the deer and go get help. If theres a will, theres a way! |

| There are 68 state parks in NY that are open to deer hunting. What town are you in? |

Heres one in the center of Ulster county open to deer hunting. Stop in the park office (thats the very first thing I do when I hunt a new piece of ground) and talk to the ranger. Tell him you are interested in hunting there and ask him where you should hunt. He will know the place better than anyone and they will help you 99% of the time. I've even had them drive me right to some great hunting areas...just because I asked!
Let me know what town your in and I can get you some maps of other public hunting lands nearby. |

I live in the town of Hurley, and the towns of Kingston, Marbletown, Rosendale, Esopus, Olive, Shandaken, Saugerties, Woodstock and Ulster are all near by.
Thanks alot for your help! |

Here is a link to 32,000 acres of public hunting land in Hurley, New York.
Never been there but I have driven through. There has to be lots of deer there. This is a link only to the "North Unit" that means there is more land open to hunting there also. Get in there. Follow the streams down into the swamplands (if you find them) look for fresh sign and hunt it. Follow the stream back out so you don't get lost. Do a little more every time you go and soon enough you will feel comfortable moving away from the stream (or river) and not feel like you will get lost.

Give it a try. Pa deer season opens in two weeks. We are about 100 miles from you where we are going to hunt there. You are welcome to stop in if your in the nieghborhood! |
