A teacher at the high school here in Ellensburg claims that he shot his deer this year from 901 yards away with a .270. He does teach physics and chemistry but how did he calculate it that precise? Do you believe this is true? I think he shot it in the nanuem area if anyone cares.

Ask him some specifics like what power scope, how high over the deer he aimed, etc. and see his responses. It is not impossible but with a 15 foot drop it is not an easy one even in zero wind. Even if he did, I wouldn't be bragging about it if I were him.

I'm with CG...quiz him some more. I'm betting it was more of a shoot and hope deal if he did it. Alot can happen at that range. Most don't even shoot their rifles enough to be confident to pull it off. Ask him what rangefinder he used? Most can't judge range for squat at closer distances...let alone coming up with a 901 yardage figure and being right on. Does he have target knobs on that scope? If so...he can tell you how many clicks on the elevation it took to get it there. Windage is another one...a little wind will sure wreak havoc on those bullets at that range. Did he dial it in or use kentucky windage? Factory ammo or reloads for that particular rifle? Yep...quiz him and see what he comes up with. I worked with a guy earlier this year that told me of one he shot last year. :) Shot it at 800yds. with a borrowed rifle in .308 caliber with factory ammo. :)

How many rounds did it take him? Did anyone else witness this? I'm going to go out on a limb here and call B.S. ::neener: Are his intials R.H. ?

I shoot a .270 and I will not hesitate to shoot out to 400 yds with a proper rest, but I have to call BS on 900 yards. I am sure he was estimating the distance.

I've dropped a doe at 327 actual yds with a .270 but if you measure it in "walking yards" it was almost 500 yds because of the slope of the terrain. Maybe it was across a valley and he measured the distance by walking to his game. Just a thought.

Well he is a physics teacher maybe he figured out a way to have the bullet follow along the slope of the terrain and up the other side to hit his target. I would think if he had any common sense he knows "walking yards" is not actual shooting distance.

He supposedly had another hunter with him. His range finder goes to 1200 yards and he says he clicked it in 4 times at 901 yards... It was one shot. Reddog im not sure on the initials but last name is H.

Must of been a Leica to go that far and give an accurate reading. I still would like to know how many clicks elevation he used?

I'm with quigley on this one. If the guy is that good with a rifle he will know exactly how many clicks were needed as well as the windage. No real hunter shoots at animals at that distance. There is a difference between being a hunter and a shooter. The animals deserve better. :[-X

I agree CG...he'll know exactly on both. To make that shot...one shot...takes a lot of shooting with that particular rifle and at that range EB. I'd like to hear what rifle, scope and ammo he was using.

...and how he steadied himself. I find the further out I shoot, the harder it is for me to steady myself. I'm talking about just target shooting, not in a hunting situation. During target practice you have all the time in the world to compose yourself, take a deep breath, etc., but everyone knows that when hunting you usually don't have the time to think all the steps through. You rely on instinct from all the practice and target shooting.

So my other question would be, how often did he practice at 900 yards?

I would have to say that it's BS on a deer. But say a Moose or an elk I would belive it. I have looked at deer at 900 yds and over and do no where the Nanuem area is and have hunted there. there is no possiable way in HELL he could have seen let alone hit a deer at 900 yds. Max yardage in the area would stop at about 550-600yds. SO I call BS I also support a .270 WSM

Not a shot I would recommend but, possible.
A 270, I'll assume it's a 270 win, doesn't retain very much energy at that range. At the least it was a very risky shot that should not be attempted. Doesn't show much respect for the game but, scores high on ego.
I would guess that you had some smoke blown up your south end while headed north.
