Hi Folks,

I'm about to purchase my first rifle. Now, being a new hunter I don't really know too much about what rifle to buy. I'll be mainly hunting whitetails and maybe the odd moose in eastern Ontario. From what I've heard the Remington model 700 would be a good choice but, this model is offered in ADL, BDL, LSS, VS and so on, not too sure what all those letters stand for. Any suggestions on what rifle you folks think would be a wise choice is greatly appreciated.

Depending on how much recoil you prefer, I would look at the 308 Win., 270, or the 30-06.

As for the rifles:
ADL is the "no-frills" rifle, as good as the rest just not as fancy.

BDL is the main line and can come in DM(detachable magazine), SS(stainless steel), or LH(left hand) models

VS is the "varmint synthetic" which is the heavier barrel and quality synthetic stock. It tends to be a little more accurate then the other normal hunting rifles but it is not a gun to take on long walks with you.

Most of the other models are variations of the above in some sort of combo. Hope this helps. For what it is worth, I think the model 700 line is a fine choice, but I am bias as I own 5 of them.

If you'd like a good valued gun that would be a great whitetail and adequate moose gun, consider the Weatherby Vanguard, available at Walmart for under $400 (volume purchasing). Another good all around is the Winchester model 70 or the Browning BDL. I agree with the cartridge choice, maybe with the exception of the .308 as I've never been fond of that cartridge. I shoot a .270 and have taken many whitetails and an elk with it. Stick to a good dependable ammo and practice for a one shot kill.

For the money, a remington 700 adl synthetic, CANNOT be beat. $349 at superstores, get it in 30-06 youll have a wide variety of ammo, for all sizes of game.

I was looking at Tikkas, and I think they are worth it for the money. Free floated barrel great trigger right out of the box and accuracy. I shot one at the range and it was as they claim, under an inch!

Bronx I take it you purchased a gun tell us what it is.Are you hunting in a gang or by yourself? If you posted this I beleive by yourself. In that case in this area try and hook up with a local gang. don;t ask try to get invited were a funny lot.As we get older the gangs are getting smaller young blood is welcomed most places.

Bronx, the 700 is a god model but there is better. Take a look at Tikka as suggested by Caveman or a Sako 75.

A nice caliber suitable for long rage shooting with excellent precision is the 6.5-284Norma.

I went out and purchased a Remington 700 BDL SS. Thanks to all that offered advice, it came in very handy on helping me decide. Oh by the way, the rifle shoots awsome... 30-06

Way to go Bronx. That is an awesome combo. What scope did you put on your rifle?
I know you will be happy with that rifle, but I am Rem. bias as you know. :smile: I hope your Remington treats you as well as mine treat me.
The color of the barrel on my sendero sf concerns me. It looks great but I am concerned that the game will see it quicker than blued. I camo wrapped mine this season for piece of mind if nothing else. Happy shooting.

What kind of camo wrap to you use Chester? Is it something like a heat activated shrink wrap?

Actually Bit, it is not that special. I had some left-over blind material that I cut in a long thin strip that I wrapped the barrel in. Double-sided tape held both ends secure. I am debating whether or not to do something more perm. to the barrel. The stainless fluted barrel looks great but I bought the gun to use.
