Hi All:
I'm located in western Washington (near Seattle) and looking for venison for dog treats...not looking for prime cuts but shanks, briskets, trim, heart, etc...ya know, all the stuff people don't want but dogs love!
We're doing this for dogs who are so allergic they can eat nothing but venison and potato diets...although I suspect they're just allergic to all the creepy hormones in "commercial meat" given to humans (and the much worse swill they put in dog foods, etc.) BUT I'd sure love to be able to allow people to give their dog treats without hurting their loyal friends!
I've found that farm raising deer and elk is not allowed in this state so I'm at the mercy of horrible shipping charges, etc. Anyone got anything in the freezer...3-5lbs will go a LONG way for us!
Anyone able to help? Thanks! Janet |

Who doesn't want deer heart? Besides tenderloin, the heart is about the best you can get.
You will want to be aware of the wastage laws in WA. (IMHO feeding shanks/brisket/heart to a dog is considered wasting) and note that it may be illegal to ship wild game into WA due to CWD. |

Thanks Billy...sigh, I don't GET it in this state, WHY can't people raise them for meat?? Hmmm, a local farmer who raises lambs cannot GIVE away the hearts so I (wrongly) assumed perhaps same for venison!
The way we make the treats is to boil the meat for the broth so wastage laws are not a concern according to the WSDA BUT the CWD is a concern even though, in 10 years of testing, they've found no effect on human health...I've been reading about it and can't help but wonder, 'specially since they're asking hunters to help them test this year.
Thank you, your reply makes me realize that my best bet is to bite the bullet and pay the shipping costs from a source I've found in Colorado who is a great guy and does his best by the animals and the customers.
Blessings, I'll ask them to pull this post and good luck this season, hope you bag the best this year! |
