Having missed every single draw this year in new mexico, I have decided to try out my luck on Barbary sheep. I have scouted the upper area of the Mt Taylor district in Grants(Northeast corner down through northern section of Black Mesa) with no luck in finding these guys. I'm headed out to the Marquez WMA today or tomorrow but was wondering if anyone had any locations where there is a fair concentration right now or where they are moving through to give me an idea of where I need to start. by the way this is the unit nine in New Mexico.

It is actually an import into the us brought into Texas and New Mexico in the late fifties to provide another critter to hunt. this link should answer any questions about it :

That is a neat looking animal. Are they interesting to hunt?

These guys are actually pretty hard to hunt they don't have the standard flight instinct and they blend in really well with the rocks out here. They also are extremely tough, I've seen one take a direct lung shot from a 30-06 and bolt up an almost sheer cliff face for over a mile before he decided the jig was up. They also have a rather long range of grazing area that they cover in the areas that I hunt and sometimes they're hard as hell to find.
